Any chance he gets DFA'd in order to improve the ballclub? He seems like a deadweight without hope of improvement. Who would we call up?

Also, if we DFA him, do we still have to pay him?

I don't think DFA'ing him is all that beneficial to the club. Teams are always looking for lefty relievers. I bet we could ship him out.

With all deliberate speed....

no and yes.

"Eyre will earn $3 million in 2006, and $4 million in each of the following two years. The deal includes a $1.5 million signing bonus, and a no-trade clause and the third year is the player's option. Other incentives in the deal could add another $2.4 million over the three years."

they have a few lefties like walrond and omalley having good seasons so far with iowa but they are starting at aaa. rapada has been hit very hard so far this year and pignatello is back at in the pen at iowa too.

Yes, we have to pay him-and I don't understand why he has little hope of improvement. He has been a pretty good reliever for most of his career, and he has just recently made a mechanical change after his horrible start. If you want to trade him, that's fine-the Cubs could use one less left-hander in the bullpen and the salary relief. He still has value though.

-and I'd have to change my sig.

Is this supposed to be serious thread? I mean come on. You want to DFA someone who was very solid the last several years after 7 IP this season?

Thank you. We should probably DFA Soriano as well since he doesn't even have a stinkin' HR yet...

Good Lord what a horrendous deal. Thanks Jim.

This is a message board...Nothing here is serious....No ones career is on the line...Unless you are Jim Hendry that is...

There's no salary cap in baseball. You may be thinking of the luxury tax instead.

If the Cubs want to trade Eyre, I'm sure they could find a trading partner. Hell, they were able to trade Neifi Perez last year so Eyre should be no problem.

No, I was more using salary cap as another term to refer to the limits of the Cubss budget-I edited out the word cap for clarity.

I would like to see the Cubs create a package of 2 or 3 players out of Jones, Murton, Eyre, Izturis and Ohman to see if we could get a starting pitcher or quality everyday RF that could help this team. I realize Eyre has a NTC, but I believe it is voidable at the player's option.

I want a RF that can offer both quality bat production and good defense, the bat to compensate for Pie in CF (who I'd like to see the Cubs stick with). I like Cliff Floyd's bat, but he is such a defensive problem, and with Soriano likely finally at home in LF, I don't see how you can make Floyd anything other than a 4th OF, you just can't take him in RF on an everyday basis.

I know everyone likes Murton, I don't dislike him, but he doesn't have the SLG we truly need from a corner OF. If Murton were a middle infielder, he'd be a keeper, but he's not.

What can we do here?

A Murton/Floyd platoon in RF might work, I guess in the short-term that is the best solution and just wait for someone to take Jones and Izturis off our hands. Is that the current plan?

To go with his 12.86 ERA, Eyre's numbers include allowing a .686 SLG, a .500 BAA, and a 3.0 WHIP. 9 appearances is a long time to keep numbers like that. If that doesn't take a sharp downward turn effective immediately, something needs to be done.

My guess is Eyre will be relegated to mop up duty for a few appearances. If he functions well there, he may work his way back into more crucial situations. If he fails there, he may end up with a "phantom" injury which would allow the Cubs to replace him with either Marmol or Rapada.

yea, I was hoping he would have gotten a little work yesterday, but I don't think Ohman and Cherry were bad choices either. I guess that means we need to have another blowout today. :)

Or a phantom injury to make room on the roster for Guzman without having to send someone down.
