Shouldn't Guzman be starting for Iowa tonight if he's going for the Cubs on Tuesday, May 1?

I was just going to say that. I thought Guz was supposed to start tonight?

Yes he is supposed to. That has been mentioned in some of the articles about him being called up to start for the Cubs next Tuesday.

On Iowacubs.com it says that Guzman is the starter.

Hello again, from what I have been led to believe Sean will start tonight for the Smokies and only throw the 1st inning. If all goes well then he will make his start on mon. I would assume Mr Hart will finish the rest of the game....

That's interesting. Definitely hope all goes well.

Story about SS Dylan Johnston. Ryne Sandberg said that Johnston has a better arm than Shawon Dunston used to...and also talks about how he's been struggling with the bat.

I don't believe that's possible. Maybe Furcal.

perhaps he didnt mean johnston has a stronger arm than dunston had. by "better" ryno might have been factoring in accuracy too.

AZ Phil[/url]"]NOTES: Rundle and Anderson would appear on first glance to be very similar type players. Both were star HS football players (wide receivers) who had received Div 1-A baseball scholarships (Rundle from Arizona and Anderson from Oklahoma State), but took Top 5 round money from the Cubs to forgo college. Both are athletic multi-tool 19-year olds who bat and throw left-handed. But that’s where the similarities end. To me, anyway, Anderson is the better player. He’s more relaxed, he makes plays on defense, he makes adjustments as necessary at the plate, and he is a better hitter. Rundle, on the other hand, has not made adjustments, seems miserable and frustrated, and looks like he wishes he could go to Tucson and play college baseball (and maybe some college football on the side!). That could all change, but so far, that’s how I see those two players.

As for today’s pitchers, Acosta and Cabrera are 18-year old Dominican RHPs who were the “Big Two” aces of the DSL Cubs starting rotation last season, and both most defintely look to have the stuff to move right into the top of the starting rotation at AZL Mesa in ‘07. Two very impressive young pitchers with plus-fastballs and good control.

Martinez (an 18-year old Mexican RHP who also pitched at DSL Cubs last season) ) looked very good in his one inning, but I wasn’t impressed at all with Clipp, Searle, or Kreier today. Each of the three had poor outings and were lucky they didn’t give up more runs than they did. Cliff Anderson and Nathan Samson bailed out Searle with fine throws to cut down runners, and catcher Blake Parker picked a runner off 2nd in the 9th to save Kreier’s ass.

There's much, much more in there - including details on the starting lineup and Ryan Harvey's last game at EXST (mammoth HR, 2 Ks). Easily the best part was reading about Acosta and Cabrera...hopefully they'll join some others (say, Cuevas, Suarez, etc.) to make another intriguing Mesa rotation this season.

Oops, the exact word Ryno used was actually stronger:

"I thought he had a stronger arm than Shawn Dunston," the Chiefs manager said.

Say what? Sandberg's double-play partner with the Chicago Cubs for years was universally recognized as the owner of one of the best arms at short in a generation. And he loved to show it off.

Cubs first baseman Mark Grace often would complain about Dunston unloading with the same high-caliber toss from 60 feet as from 180.

"Dylan doesn't have to wind up or gather himself as much (as Dunston)," Sandberg said. "He has a cannon, and he's just effortless."

...

"I have a pretty good arm, but I can be a little inaccurate at times," he said. "I was a closer in high school. I'd just come in and throw fastballs."

Is it already decided Guzman will get called up?

If he has a bad start is there a chance Marmol might be called up?

Hendry said that Guzman earned the chance to start with his performance in the majors, no matter how he starts tonight.

To add to that, I read elsewhere that the Cubs asked Guzman to work on specific things and he wasn't hitting his spots a few times with that. His velo was good (topped out at 99).
