Why can't Theriot play SS?

Given how many lineups there have been, I can't see him sticking with Theriot yet. It is positive that he probably did show enough arm and range to get his bat in the lineup at SS (while he produces) when he was getting pregame reps at SS along w/Derosa.

Lou has said that he'll stick with the productive hitters and no other middle infielder has been hotter than Riot. It's been obvious for a while; DeRosa taking grounders at SS was out of fear that he'd lose his starting job to Theriot.

if my recent season of MVP 05 is any indication, Theriot should be the starting 2b and hit leadoff. He'll hit .308 with 21 hr, 65 rbi, 119 runs, and 80 steals. Soriano will follow him at .298 / 44 / 118. DLee will follow with the triple crown --- .336 / 51 / 124.

 

Cubs win the Central going away -- 98 wins.

If he didn't have to move to get to any of the balls hit to him, how do you know he doesn't have the range?

Lou said that Theriot is the SS and for good reason. At least he can get on base.

I can understand it, but it only works if that turns out to be the only weak spot in the lineup. Our lineup has been way too inconsistant to have the better defensive player in over the better offensive player.

Agreed with that. I also agree that Theriot might still be quite good defensively at SS, but today didn't have a single play that allowed him to show off any of his defensive skills. Right now though, the team needs Theriot's bat in the lineup at the 2nd spot, especially while they let Pie adjust to the major leagues. Izturis can be used in games as a pinch runner and then stay in as a defensive replacement, and have Theriot move to another position in some of those games. Also, Theriot will be needed to play other positions at times, so Izturis will get starts on those days. For now though, the team needs Theriot in there most days.

Im confident with Izzy making the defensive plays at the ss position. However, im not confident with him swinging the bat. I value defense pretty high on a baseball team. The ss position, in my opinion, is a very demanding spot on the field that needs to be filled by someone who fields the ball consistently. Can Theriot be that guy? We will find out. He is athletic enough to play it, but can he play consistently like Izturis has shown he can?

crapturis leads the team in errors, he's not the same player he once was. Your going off his reputation and nothing he's done since becoming a cub has even resembled his preceeding reputation. Theriot was a SS in the minors and will do just fine at that position every day.
