Why can't Theriot play SS?

In the minors, Theriot was an error machine at SS. 40 errors in 189 games. That's not good.

 

Theriot's offense isn't good enough to warrant that kind of a defensive liability at SS.

 

Izturis's defense isn't good enough to warrent that kind of offensive liability.

 

The least they can do is give Theriot some time out there to prove his critics wrong.

 

All our SS options suck. That Theriot is being put at SS just underlines how bad we are at that position.

 

There's no doubt in my mind that upgrading SS is the single biggest need we have for position players. But Theriot in at SS for now let's us keep Pie in the lineup (and we've disputed this before). If we could upgrade SS (can I get an Arod! AMEN) and move Theriot to 2B we're doing great.

 

Look at this way too. With Pie, Theriot, and Murton in the lineup we'd actually have three good young CHEAP players in the lineup. That kind of player development makes signing Arod actually feasible. Cheap talent allows for expensive talent elsewhere.

Yeah, and Lou has more or less benched Izturis in the last week or more. Anyone else want to compliment Lou for doing so? (besides me)

You must have watched a different game then. I saw only one play that would probably have been made by another SS (the bobble) and one that he dove over (Edmonds put out). On a play where it is lined past a diving SS, I tend to give the SS the benefit of the doubt. Hey, I've even see D-Lee miss one or two of those this year.

 

The problem with his dive if you watch the replay was that he took the wrong angle on the ball. Izturis or Cedeno would have looped back to make that play on Edmonds ball. Theriots dive was towards the bag.

 

The other play that should have been made was the IF hit behind the 2b bag. Several other people on the team could have thrown him out, Theriot just wasnt one of them.
