Sadly I think we are still gonna lose 90 games this year.

Yet, the Cardinals with largely a collection of crap will win 90 games.

Nah they won't they suck too. Even Larussa can't fix this mess. They will be lucky to get to .500

Look, Miller had his shot and I accepted it. I never liked the idea, but I was okay with it.

Some minor league stats:

Ryan O'Malley - 0-1, 1.25 ERA in 4 starts, 21.2 IP, 20 hits, 5 runs, 3 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 9 Ks and a .253 opp avg.

Les Warlond - 2-0, 1.06 ERA in 3 starts, 17 IP, 10 hits, 2 runs, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 10 Ks and a .179 opp avg.

Carlos Marmol - 2-0, 1.65 ERA in 3 starts, 16.1 IP, 11 hits, 3 runs, 3 ER, 4 BB, 24 Ks and a .183 opp avg.

I know it's AAA stats, but I will take my chance with any of those guys or Guzman before I ever throw Miller on the mound for a start again.

Niiiiice.

Yeah, I was about to bold that part, too. I know they all have given up a good chunk of hits, but it looks like they manage to get out of it.

Walrond and Marmol both have WHIP's under 1 and O'Malley's isn't much over 1. Definitely a good sign with Marmol.

How about the Cubs DFA Miller and call up Cherry until it's time for the fifth starter. Then send down Cherry and bring up Guzman.

Anything that takes Miller off the mound would be great.

Lou wants 12 pitchers-that would still leave him with 11. I do like the idea of bringing up Cherrry now and releasing Miller. Then you bring up a starter next week (likely Guzman) and either demote Pie or trade Jones.

Jones is the best hitting OF ATM. He is not my favorite player on the Cubs but the Cubs shouldn't be rushing to get rid of him, without being sure that Pie is going to stick.

Pie is hitting half a mendoza right now, he probably wont stick.

Who the hell is Les Warlond, and when did he become so effective?

journeyman, he made a few starts for the Cubs last year (and sucked) and pitched a little bullpen in september. Ever since spring training he's been lights out.

I would agree. Like IMB said, I don't think Pie is going to stick right now. My guess is that when that starter is pulled up, Pie will be sent down for a while. My guess is that if Jones is traded this year, it won't be until closer until the deadline.

I just don't get it. Those stats Fred posted clearly show how terrible he was last year, the only bright spot being his high K rate, which was completely overshadowed by his inability to prevent hits or walks.

Oh, and I guess it's spelled "Walrond". Looking at his Baseball Cube stats I can see that he's really just been everywhere, never really finding success. The guy is 30 now!

I keep thinking that "Walrond" is a cross between a Walnut and and Almond, but I can't figure out where the stupid R comes from.

Every time I hear his name, I think of walrus'. Odd.

Also, I seriously doubt - as bad as Miller's been - that O'Malley or Walrond would do any better. I'm not sure Marmol would right now either. I'll take Guzman personally.

I agree about O'Malley and Walrond. They are AAA rotation filler and should not even remotely considered for the major league rotation.

Pie seems to have the tools but the Cubs are too desperate for offense to stick with him right now. My guess is that he goes down any day now and they bring up Cherry to fortify the bullpen. When time comes to need the 5th starter again they bring up Guzman, send down Cherry and exile Miller to long relief. I don't see Hendry giving up on him just yet. First of all, he will want to be sure that Guzman can cut it so he will want him as insurance, secondly he probably would want to hold on to him in an effort to get something for him in a trade somewhere down the road.
