I want to see how Lou configures the OF when Fonz returns. Personally I would put Fonz in LF for a few games so he wouldn't have to run as much and move Jones to CF. Murt would stay in RF.

I'd prefer Soriano in RF because he's got a much better arm.

I get the distinct sense that the sooner the Cubs put Soriano in left and leave him there for good, and quit trying to make him into something he's not, the better off everyone will be.

Maybe I'm wrong (and hopefully I am), and this whole CF thing will work out, but if it doesn't, my next move is not to try him in yet another unfamiliar spot like RF. The phrase, "out of the frying pan and into the fire" races to mind.

To me the issue is not what to do with Soriano, I think you have it completely right, its what to do with Jones and Floyd, how to play them where and when

I mean, if we had an OF of Murton, Pie and Soriano with Soriano in Left (or right...) Murton in the other corner and Pie in C, I would be REALLY happy with that, but what to do with Floyd and Jones? To me those are 2 wasted roster spots. Especially when you have Pagan and the Riot as very capable occasional replacements.

Pagan is total junk. Floyd and Jones, if used off the bench, can provide some power. Theriot should be starting in at least some games.

No, going back to a wimpy, no power bench is a *terrible* idea.

Allright, so bench Floyd/jones. It won't be appreciated, but who cares? I just don't see the value of those 2 on this team. Pie/Murton/Soriano OF. Let them develop, let them stick to the same position. Get the riot a few games out there and have Floyd/Jones as situational guys off the bench and against pitchers they have a proven record against.

I just don't see the value of either of those players on this team. If they disappeared today, how much worse would we be?

Come on, if both get regular playing time, JJ and Cliff will likely provide 50+ HRs and 160+ RBIs, which last time I checked can help win us some games.

he's not making THAT much money for his production, really.

Well, sure for a big market team I would agree, but I would think our options would be limited in dealing with certain teams....

The asking price in the offseason was probably too high. The Angels are struggling to score runs. they might be a possible destination and they could certainly afford Jones' contract.

BTW, how's little league going?

For what it's worth, I ran track and cross country back in the day. I took a year off after high school before going to college (I had a scholarship, but needed the break). During my year off, I trained every day twice a day. Then one day, my hamstring went "POP" and my face hit the track pretty quickly.

It wasn't the worst hamstring injury ever, but it was more severe than what it appears Soriano suffered.

My point to all this though is that I could walk just fine with the injury, but once I'd try move faster or use any "strength" I would feel like I was going to collapse. So when Soriano walked off on his own power, I was still a bit scared...

Exactly, I had the same issue throughout my high school and college career. I had bad hamstrings. You can't change speeds with a hurt hamstring. You can only walk, and sometimes that is even painful. If Soriano himself thinks he'll miss 5-7 days, we can probably count on adding a few more to that total.

ESPN 1000 just reported Soriano has had his MRI and Soriano himself said that the MRI showed there wasn't a tear.

BTW, how's little league going?

Hi ya Biitner,

LL is going well. I'm coaching 10 & 11 year olds (my son is 11). This year was the first year we actually had a draft, so it was different in past years, where we pretty much got to pick one or two kids and then everyone else was assigned to our team.

We're in a 7 team league (within my son's division) and the overall competition has been pretty good thus far. It's neat because it's real baseball now. Stealing, running on overthrows, no five run rule limits at the end of every inning. Everything is played out. It's been tough so far this year with the weather (two rainouts so far), that not only have the games been tough to get in, but we haven't been able to have many practices either.

How are things with your son. Is he in coach pitch now?

I think they are comparable but no valueless. I would be for trading Jones and bringing up Pie. I still think Floyd should be kept though. I dont want Ward playing substantial 1b time if Lee goes out. I also would still like to see Floyd get 2 starts a week in the OF against tough RHers.

Actually after thinking this whole thing over, I would like to see the Cubs just cut Ward or trade him for spare change and bring up Pie. Ward is of no use whatsoever on this team.

I can definitely see how Ward has little value. Floyd though -- I'm not sure why all the ire over this guy. If used off the bench, he's lefty power we haven't had off the bench since Glenallen Hill. He definitely has a very solid bench role to play on this club. Just not as primary starter over Murton, that's all.

From the Cubs:

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled outfielder Felix Pie from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding roster move, Chicago optioned right-handed relief pitcher Angel Guzman to Iowa.

Pie, 22, is hitting .444 (16-for-36) with a home run and six RBI in 11 games with Iowa this season. He has nine walks and 16 runs scored, having hit safely in 10 of his 11 appearances with a .583 slugging percentage and a .543 on-base percentage.

Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by Chicago July 3, 2001, Pie (pronounced Pee-yay) has appeared in 498 career minor league games with a .296 batting average (587-for-1,981), 43 home runs and 220 RBI. He has 173 walks and 99 stolen bases.

Following the 2006 season, Pie was named the top prospect in the Cubs organization by Baseball America. He earned a Gold Glove in the 2006 Dominican Winter League following the season.

Pie, who will wear number 17, is looking to make his Major League debut and is available for today’s game vs. San Diego at 1:20 p.m. CT.

Guzman, 25, has posted a 2.45 ERA (2 ER/7.1 IP) while walking one and striking out eight in four relief appearances for Chicago this season. He was originally signed by the Cubs as a minor league free agent November 12, 1999.

This organization smokes crack.

They're probably stretching him out to start after Miller sucks today.
