Forgive me if this is being discussed elsewhere, but I didn't see it.

Anyways, I just got home and read that Soriano left the game with an injury. What's the latest on that?

Cubs.com[/url]"]Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano had to leave Monday night's game after suffering a strained left hamstring trying to catch a ball in center. His status was listed as day-to-day.

I want to see how Lou configures the OF when Fonz returns. Personally I would put Fonz in LF for a few games so he wouldn't have to run as much and move Jones to CF. Murt would stay in RF.

I'd prefer Soriano in RF because he's got a much better arm.

I'd be fine with that too. Anything that gets the expensive guy with the bad hammy out of CF is good.

 Sure.

I worry about this because it is his hamstring. As a former track and cross country runner, I can tell you that a hamstring injury is not something that heals quickly. Especially for a guy like Soriano, who's game is built largely upon speed and generating power.

Blah, as long as he can hit he'll be fine. He can lay off the base stealing for a while. He isn't Juan "I need my legs to have value" Pierre. Edited by 98navigator

If he does on the DL, will we see Pie sooner than expected?

Probably, but they wouldn't have said "day to day" if there was an idea that a DL trip would be necessary. The Cubs have been really cautious about diagnosing injuries and time off lately (primarily because they've been burned in the past).

BJ Ryan went from day to day, to 15 day DL, to out 4-6 weeks very quickly. They need to see the results of the MRI tomorrow though before they can tell if he's going to need a lot of time off or not. I would guess it's not too bad, but I've been wrong before. COUGHmarkpriorCOUGH

It was encouraging to see him walk off the field on his own, though. He looked fine then.

Yeah I couldn't see much of a limp at all from LF bleachers that's why I thought it was a jammed wrist or something like that.

I get the distinct sense that the sooner the Cubs put Soriano in left and leave him there for good, and quit trying to make him into something he's not, the better off everyone will be.

Maybe I'm wrong (and hopefully I am), and this whole CF thing will work out, but if it doesn't, my next move is not to try him in yet another unfamiliar spot like RF. The phrase, "out of the frying pan and into the fire" races to mind.

On Comcast, they claimed that Soriano himself said he'd be out 5-7 days unless the MRI confirmed something worse. I don't know how accurate that is since he is not a doctor, but its something worth mentioning..

Yeah.. That gets me more worried because it's directly from Fonso and not some other ignorant entertainment and sports programming network.

whatever the case, the Cubs will be fine. It's not like Soriano was really helping them win games... I liked that Lou wasn't worried in the postgame show. He made a point to say that "injuries are a part of the game" and gave the impression that it isn't something that will get in the way of this team's ability to win. It shouldn't in the short term but it's nice to hear.

Last year, Dusty acted like the world was coming to an end when someone got injured. I think he managed that way too... His "snake bit" act was old.

The "snakebit" thing was amusing, but the world pretty much was coming to an end when someone got hurt on our team the last two years. We had absolutely no one to back up DLee last year and our season went down the crapper because of it. Of course, we would've eventually fallen to the wayside anyway with our bad pitching and our lack of offense at the other positions on the field, but that probably wouldn't have happened until at least another few weeks in May

At least we have depth in the OF this year and Pie is pretty close to ML ready. That's why I'm not worried in the least if Fonzie has to go on the DL. That being said, I think he'll only be out a few days. Hamstring issues suck, but I think he'll be good to go in the 5-7 days that he mentioned.

Soriano in right, Floyd/Murton in left, Pie in center, Jones traded for minor leaguers.

This will be the case in less than two months, maybe sooner if the Cubs decide that Soriano cant hang in center because of either ability or health problems.

How long does it take to heal? Hamstring injuries seem to hang on or nag for a long time, if not the remainder of the season, I remember a hamstring injury basically ending Rick Sutcliffe' season in 1985.

It depends how severe. I don't think this is anything that will keep him out for period of time. He walked off the field by himself. He'll be fine..
