Let's face facts. He's a catcher on the wrong side of 30 in the final year of his contract. With his bat there's gotta be a taker for him. It just doesn't make sense to keep him.

With the offensive moves that the Cubs have made, there's no need for his bat with his terrible defense. We may just have a guy better than him as it is. Look at the Cardinals. Yadier Molina can't hit, but look at the crappy pitchers who have success in St Louis. Coincidence? Of course not. Michael Barrett needs to go. We can give the job to say Jake Fox who homered twice today and is cheap. Sure he may not be as good as Barrett today, but if we replace Barrett with Fox and trade Barrett for someone good it's a great move. Besides Barrett's glove sucks.

barrett's defense issues are way overblown.

that said, i don't think barrett is indispensable, and would agree moving him for the right price.

I'd only want to see barret go if he brought in someone with good offense in a spot we need, or a good pitcher or very good prospects.

I'd like to hang on to him for now. His offense will help us put some W's on the board.

I would agree with WF 22. We're probably not going to get anything good for Barrett at this point, so just enjoy this season and let him walk in free agency. He'll be fine for 2007. Edited by Andy

I'm guessing that this is a joke thread due to Fox's hot night tonight.

But for real, if we trade Barrett, who catches? Are we ready for 130 games of Henry Blanco?

Scoring Runs is overrated.

I think the importance percentage goes something like 40% fielding, 40% pitching, 15% clutch offense, 10% hustle, 5% other offense, and 5% statistics.

Wrong. Computers don't play baseball. 0% statistics.

Hell no. Barrett is a premier offensive catcher. His defense is not that bad. Yes, he's made a few bad plays you can blow out of proportion this year, but overall he's about average behind the plate, below average in throwing guys out.

Seriously look at last years NL catchers fielding stats and tell me what is so atrocious that we should give up Michael's bat. Little bit below average in errors actually, too high in passed balls (not that he's alone there). And he had far less in '05, so it could have been an aberration. Too many stolen bases, but it isn't like he's the only guy teams run on. The Mets somehow had a great year with Lo Duca behind the plate.

Yes, Yadier Molina plays steller defense, but he also hits like a little girl. Give me Barrett's bat and his defensive flaws anyday of the week over Yadier. Forget trading him, I want a 3 year deal.

Matt Murton caught in high school. We both know how quickly he would win this boards' heart behind the dish.

I NEVER want to see Murton catch. If you think Barrett is bad, I'd bet Murton would be worse.

Murton would catch better that Barrett because Matt has one thing that Michael never will: Heart. The cold steel and silicon of a computer can't compare with the 10 ounces of veiny muscle beating in Murton's chest.

I'd be all for it. But, if we're dealing Barrett to replace him with Hank for a full season, I'm not so sure.

If only there were a 3 team deal that would allow us to bring in Saltamacchia, who is blocked in Atlanta.

murton doesn't have heart. he's heartless and spineless. real men swing and don't clog bases.

Who are you to talk about heart? I saw you use stats in that other thread. There were all kinds of numbers in that post! I bet you even used a computer to get them.

If Michael Barrett wanted a heart he'd just rip it out of A.J. Pierzjdlfyky and use his. Sort of like Chuck Norris.

Barrett is a stud with the bat. His overblown defensive problems are more than offset by what he brings to the table on offense.
