I don't think Sammy returned just to get to 600, I think he genuinely felt he could come back to the game and play well and I think he wanted to end up leaving on his own terms, when he felt the game had finally passed him by. As one of the best home run hitters ever, I think he deserves that.

Sammy came back to reach 600 plain and simple.

"I still have a lot of passion for the game and I'm in shape. I want to get to 600 home runs before saying goodbye," said Sosa.

That was from before he signed with Texas and announced he wanted to return.

Yep, plain and simple. He said he wanted to get to 600 and that's all.

Oh wait, he said he still has passion for the game and feels he's in good enough shape to try and play before leaving on his own terms? What a selfish prick.

That quote clearly states he wants to get to 600 before saying goodbye. Why not say I want to win a World Series before saying goodbye? Because Sammy is about Sammy, and nothing more.

So he can't have his own personal goals?

It also states that he still has a lot of passion for the game and he's in good enough shape to come back. Yes, he mentions he wants to hit 600, and I see what you're saying, but you're ignoring the other half of quote. He could've said he wants to come back and win a World Series, sure, but come on, at that point he had to know his choices for teams were limited and he knew he was going to come back to a not so great team. I completely understand what you are saying, but to think that Sammy is just coming back for 600 is a little ridiculous to me. Yes, he's always liked to be in the limelight, but who doesn't? Every baseball player would like to spend some time basking in the glory. Did McGwire not want to break Maris's record? Did Maddux not want to get to 300? Did Sandberg/does Santo not want to make the HOF? Does Bonds not want to get to 756? I don't see why it's that big of a deal that Sammy wanted to get his 600th HR. It's a rare, great achievement.

And if he only came back to get 600, has he retired yet? Did I miss the press conference?

good for him, I guess, but it's a pretty empty accomplishment, especially since he's doing it on a horrible team and only returned to baseball to reach this "milestone". Doesn't change how I felt about him in his glory days, nor does it feel how I feel about him now

What does him being on a horrible team have to do with whether or not he can still hit HR's?

It doesn't effect whether he can or can't hit HR, it just means the HR's are meaningless in the scope of a team game. As a Cubs fan, you should know all about Sammy hitting 50 HR for hopelessly horrible teams

Of course, but all the home run records are ultimately looked at as solo achievements, good team or not.

Well, if we can get 25 players of whom it can be said:

he's been a model citizen and a model teammate. He's worked his tail off, and he deserves everything that's going to come along with hitting No. 600 achieving his own selfish personal goals

I don't see the downside. Am I missing something?

Am I missing something because I have no idea what the hell you mean.

In premium, "hitting no. 600" is crossed out - UBlink is saing he doesn't see the downside to a model citizen/teammate who works his tail off but achieves personal goals.

The majority of every player in MLB history's HRs are meaningless. Only HRs taht are the difference between a win and a loss are meaningful if you want to get technical. There's nothing empty about the accomplishment at all.

Here's the video from my seat of Sammy's 600th

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWI9TTkZKFo

the booing at the end is the best part

was that you, IMB?

Yeah.

Thes best thing is, the guy in front of me notices me booing and goes "Yeah, try and follow that!", and Catalanotto immediately hits a home run.

If you listen at the end of the video, you can hear him start to say "Yeah, try and fo..."
