Sorry to back track, but did Murton get lifted for Theriot for the heck of it or is Murton injured? I read back through the pages dealing with that inning and didn't find any mention of it.

I think it was for the heck of it, I never heard an injury mentioned.

Thanks. I never thought of Murton as being particularly slow. And I hate lifting a good hitter in favor for a PH or PR in a close game.

Especially given his OF defense last night.

He got lifted for Theriot, because Cubs used Theriot to steal 2nd base for the go-ahead run. It was a good move in my opinion.

This is the same guy that ran into an out at 3rd, right?

Maybe it was a good move, but Murton's a pretty good hitter and not exactly Cecil Fielder when it comes to speed. Did we really need to burn through another hitter on our already rather short bench for that? I vote no.

Murton would have clogged up the basepaths.

Why the hell would you pinch hit with Cedeno? It doesn't make sense. He's pretty much the worst hitter on the bench, or at least close to it.

because for no real reason, lou pinch ran theriot for murton, leaving ronny as the only rh off the bench.

the cubs' bench has too many guys who serve the same purpose -- cedeno and theriot, ward and floyd.

for no real reason? theriot stole second. he served his purpose, even though he screwed up and made a dumb out.

Note to Lou:

Ronny's OBP and SLG are both significantly higher vs. righties.

Floyd would be a better bet vs a lefty than Cedeno.

So would Theriot, but Lou wasted him when he pinch-ran for Murton.

In fairness to Lou, the Cubs left a number of RISP. He was trying to tack on runs earlier in the game but the batters didn't come through.

Top of the order will get another crack at them!

I don't care how good he looked in spring training, pinch hitting with Ronny Cedeno is Dusty-esque.

not hardly. the season is young and cedeno needs some plate appearances with something on the line.

just because cedeno didn't get a hit doesn't mean it was a bad move.

I wish more people would understand this concept.

All moves that end in a good result aren't good moves, nor are moves that turn out bad automatically bad moves.

They will as soon as we win the world series...so you may be right.

Dusty gave us enough message board fodder for multiple lifetimes.

So I guess he didn't. Why burn out your bench that early in the game?
