Bottom line is that when Jason Marquis gives up one run in a start this season, we should win every freaking time because it won't happen often.

Hill/Z/Miller this weekend should add up to 2 wins - it better.

And by the way, have we started every season 1-2 in the history of mankind? Because it sure feels like it.

RICHARD HILL will save us tomorrow.

I think Rich Hill will have a good game too. But our offense is the thing that needs to be picked up. Not the pitching. Both Lilly and Marquis only gave up 1 earned run in 6-7 innings each. .

I think playing in a controlled climate will help somewhat.

Did they wind up getting that roof fixed in time?

They must have; I saw people in the stands yesterday without coats (not to mention players in short sleeves).

Amen. Freaking pathetic how our bullpen can't hold up a great outing by Marquis.

Still, our offense was pretty bad once again. With the lineup that we have, we have to get more than 2 runs a game. 2 runs a game won't win many games for any team, especially with our team. We were very fortunate to get two great outings from Lilly and Marquis. Unfortunately, we only took one of them.

No offense, but this isn't the right way to think about the series. Zambrano not giving the team a chance to win is a bigger outrage! The bullpen had not given up a run before today. I agree that it's a waste to ruin a good start by Marquis (or anyone else for that matter) but the team is counting more heavily on Zambrano. He has to step up and pitch well immediately; as he will be pitching opposite Sheets over the weekend. This team can't afford another 0-2 April from Carlos... Marquis giving the team a chance to win is gravy.

You basically said what I just did at the end. Marquis giving the team a chance to win IS gravy and our pen did blow it. We have to win these games that Marquis pitches this well because it's not going to come often.

My point is that Zambrano's starts need to equal team victories more often than not. The team can't afford for him to go 0 for April. Losing today's game stings but there will be more days when the bullpen stinks--- but 2 out of the 3 days they pitched very well.

I also agree that the offense didn't do it's job today because they should have outscored the Reds.

However, in the broader view of the series, Zambrano was a larger disapointment than the bullpen. Of course, we would have liked a 'pen meltdown to have happened in Zambrano's already losing effort, so they could have locked down today's game, but things don't workout that way.

Bottom line: the ace can't give up 5 runs in 5 IP.

He will have to pitch deeper into games and keep himself under control... For as much as I hate to say it, he has failed miserably when pitching in high pressure situations. I hope he's up for the challenge this weekend against Sheets.

last year they started out 4-1 actually....but that kinda gets lost in the shuffle since the cubs loss 95 games after that start

Bullpen had one bad day. Starters have been very good. . . . Z wasn't THAT bad.

Offense has been sketchy.

It's April 6.

where were you sitting? it was cold, but a few times the sun was shining on us, and it was glorious.

the best part was there was an obscene amount of vendors trying to sell lemon ice and dippin dots. why even try?

It just seems to add up to horible timing. We seem to have horrible freaking timing, doesn't it seem that way? One game we'll put up 9 runs on the board as the starter gives up only 2. Another game the starter will have a shutout, but we can't even score one run. This inconsistancy needs to stop. And I pray Lou can help with that.

Z was pretty bad but like you said it's April 6. Only one start so let's hope he shows improvement this weekend.

I posted a new blog where I make some observations on the first series. Let me know what you think.

I think that it is long....very long. J/k Vance, I agree with everything you had to say in there. I am really looking forward to Hill striking out 14 Brewers tomorrow, while Barrett and Murton get back on track (I'm not expecting much from Jacque though).
