Anyone else surprised this guy didn't make the roster after the good Spring he had? Maybe this has already been discussed, but I just wanted to get peoples' thoughts...

I would've expected him on the team. Not Neal Cotts, at all. I guess its just contract issues.. But if Prior doesnt make the team, how the hell does Neal Cotts?

I actually hadn't heard of Rocky Cherry until I joined this board last year. Is he getting primed to be our future closer sometime in the next couple years? His ST stats are remarkable

I don't know what to make of him, personally. He's gonna be 28 in August, and he's only got 2.2 innings above AA. He also missed almost all of 2005.

On the other hand, his numbers have looked pretty darn good, save for an embarrassing 2004 season with juiced hit and homerun rates, which he seems to have fixed since he came back.

I'd like to see what he could do with a roster spot.

Unfortunately, we have so many relievers I feel Wayne Krivsky's wet dream right now.

Like Ohman, or Wuertz he has some promise but the real closer is Samardziji, he has the personality and talent.

He didn't make the team because he needs to work on a few things and Cotts is a lefty.

Cotts reminds me of Cliff Bartosh. Acquired to be on the roster but didn't really deserve it. Maybe Cotts will pull a Bartosh and be demoted.

I can't believe someone brought up Cliff Bartosh. :D

Well, I did. :D

He can also be considered relevent since we gave up another awesome name pitcher (Bear Bay) to get him.

Bear Bartosh is better.

I'm still bitter about that deal. I don't care if Bay never sees the light of day in the majors, that still was an incredibly stupid trade. Dusty deciding to let Bartosh collect cobwebs didn't exactly help matters, either. Blech.

My gut feeling is that Cherry will be the first reliever called up if any trouble hits the bullpen. Granted, I would rather that never happened, but given the finicky nature of bullpens with injuries, slumps, and whatnot, it's pretty much a given.

Personally I think the Cubs made the right call. Cherry is young, he still needs game experience. He has started during his minor league career and he needs to learn how to close. Besides, I never really trust ST stats anyways. If after a few weeks he is dominating at Iowa, then you can bring him up. No real problem with that as far as I can see.
