Dear Jim Hendry,

From now on, no more drafting of pitchers with a history arm problems in the higher rounds. That means no more Bobby Brownlies and no more Grant Johnsons in the first couple of rounds. Oh, and please draft better.

Dear Toupeeonfire;

You may have noticed, but Stocksdale(sp?) is now with Baltimore, along with many ex-cub prospects) and Wilkens is now in charge of the draft.

Signed Jim

Hey Jim, nice to hear from you!

Are you saying that Hendry has no input on the draft? Considering his friendship with former Notre Dame baseball coach, Paul Mainieri, draft picks like Grant Johnson and Jeff Samardzija have Hendry's name written all over them. While Wilken may now be running the draft with some degree of autonomy, when it comes to the top picks, where money and signability is often as much a factor as talent, Hendry has the final say.

The Cubs also released Matt Harrington yesterday.

I'm not sure whether to laugh at him or feel sorry for him. He must rue the day he first came into contact with Scott Boras.

Wasn't Boras the second agent that led him astray?

yes, ithe real culprit was a guy who's initials are T.T., i believe. I can't think of his name. Tony Tanzer? Something like that.

Regardless, Harrington could've ignored him and just taken the money that first year. Lots of blame to go around on that one. Kind of a sad story.

Uncalled for.

You are correct, Tommy Tanzer was his first agent.

Chadd Blasko was cut last week too.

All four of the first rounders from that draft are officially gone.

When was Hagerty released? I never read that he was, but I did read that he was in minor league camp.

Gah, you're right. But Luke is on his last leg.

Unless I'm mistaken, Hagerty was a 2nd round, and not 1st round, pick.

That I'm afraid you're right about.

Scout.com has an updated list of players who have been released. I think some of these were named in other threads. Released:

Thomas Atlee

Matt Ciaramella

Pete Farina

Lincoln Holdzkom (!)

Jonathan Hunton

Luke Hagerty sighting:

Hagerty is currently in Arizona working on a more consistent arm angle for better results. He will stay in Extended Spring Training for the time being.

Arm slot aside, the bulk of Hagerty’s struggles the last few seasons have come from the mental side, as he relayed to us last summer in Arizona.

Since then, Hagerty (now 26) has teamed with a sports psychologist and says he feels he is “getting to the light at the end of the tunnel.”

Mike Billek mention:

Entering camp last month, Billek’s velocity was still down from his ’05 days, but he has been hampered this spring by shoulder tendonitis and reports to slowly working his way back into the low 90s.

Billek is in Extended Spring Training, where the Cubs have approached him about a return to full-time starting some time later this season. He spent parts of last season in the bullpen.

I'm still holding out minimal hope for Hagerty, especially if his struggles the last couple of years were mental rather than physical. I hadn't heard that before.

Holdzcolm released? We just got him back.

Maybe he thought that there wasn't much of a future for him here, so he requested his release to look for a more favorable situation.

yeah didn't he have some special provisions in his Rule 5 draft fallout, where he could test free agency if returned?
