What a day today - 4 for 5

DeRosa is having a horrible spring while Theriot is ripping it up

He can play anywhere and is showing that he can also run the bases. I see him easily leading off or batting in the 2 hole in the future.

Please Lou, start The Riot opening day in Cincinnati.

He has earned it.

There was once this guy named Gary Scott he had a great spring training a few years ago as well, what ever happened to him? I think he's selling cars somewhere in FL. A great spring training means very little. If he has a good year as a super sub maybe they think about moving him to a full time job. Unless DeRosa gets hurt Id rather let him have the job at second. At least he's proven to be good over a full season. Its not that I have anything against Theriot, I do like him, I just want to see it over a larger span of time. Im glad we have him.

I'd rather see DeRosa at 2B and Theriot at SS replacing Izturis.

Seconded.

Third'd. As long as those two are up the middle.

Although, Izzy is having a good spring. Maybe he'll keep it up.

DeRosa has never played a full season, let alone proven to be good over a full season.

I can't remember how to get it to line up, but you get the point. He was solid for one more or less full season last year. Beyond that, he's pretty much been a bench guy.

I am not concerned who is the starting 2nd basemen in Cincinati on April 2. I will become concerned if there is a player on the bench outplaying a regular and our manager says that the regular is a veteran and brings more to the game than just numbers. If that happens I will be concerned.

As long as Theriot performs he will get the opportunity to play.

I agree. We have a manager who will play the best performing player. Not the one with the better past, etc.

The one good full season of his career...and most of that in the OF. If Markie does settle in early at his usual .270/.330 numbers (and at age 32) this will bear watching.

I have faith in Louuuuuu to play his players.

I would still love to see Theriot in the 1 or 2 spot in the lineup.

Not going to happen, as Soriano ain't getting moved from that leadoff spot - and I don't think Theriot is even in Izturis' league defensively. I do wonder how good DeRosa would be at SS, with Theriot at 2B.

I do think when Theriot plays at 2B, 3B, or the OF he will bat 2nd-that seems to be how Lou is doing it this spring, and it makes sense. On any days that he happens to play SS, he'll probably bat 8th.

Theriot's been proving himself for his last 180 ABs now. His should get lots of playing time until he proves unworthy of it.

I'd take Theriot at 2B against LH pitching (w/ DeRosa in RF) and as much time at SS as I can get.

I suppose Derosa will get the job out of ST, but I'd rather see Theriot.

To my mind, Derosa has proven he can have a career year when put in the ideal hitter situation. Too bad he can't play for Texas and post his numbers to the Cubs.

Theriot will hopefully be the starter by June, leaving Derosa where he has always belonged: coming off the bench as a sub infielder.

I still don't feel completely sold on Soriano in the leadoff spot.

I just think Soriano represents too much power and not a really good OB% to stick at the top. I guess he will be a dynamic type leadoff man, and know he will be in the pitchers head as a threat to steal, but I just like the high OB% guys (if you have them) at the top. Having said that, it is pretty much automatic that he will score at least 100 runs, regardless of his OB% - but he would not be the consistant scoring threat as a guy like Theriot (I really think he and Murton would easily be able to have at least .350 OB%).

I think the Cubs have a real good chance to have a good defensive/offensive team with this lineup:

2B Theriot

LF Murton

1B Lee

3B Ramirez

RF Soriano

CA Barrett

CF Pie

SS Izturis

I remember Great Scott quite well. Harry was really hyping him. After he flamed out with the Cubs he was taken by a team (I believe Florida, but it may have been Colorado) in the expansion draft, and he couldn't even stick in the majors with an expansion team.

He was traded to Florida with Alex Arias for Greg Hibbard. The next spring he was traded to the Reds and sent to the Twins a few months later.

That's right. I knew he went to an expansion team, I just forgot the manner in which he left. That actually turned out pretty good, because Hibbard was the Cubs' best starter for a year or two.

I will refer to Theriot from now on as Dominos.

All he does is deliver.

Wow, I like that alot...and I will be using it in the future!

We have a manager who has been saying lately that he will play the best performing player, in stark contrast to his actions on the last team he managed.

Let's save the absolute comments until we've actually seen him work during the season. I like what he's said just as much as anybody here, but he's yet to follow through on any of that (through no fault of his own, granted). Let's remember to not get too worked up over a couple of sound-bytes, alright?
