Coats really, REALLY wants to make this team!

I fully support and endorse this nomination!

I'd take him over Cedeno at this point. If we go to an 11-man pitching staff, I can see Coats and Pagan getting those last two spots.

I think Cedeno would be the lead candidate if they go with only 11 pitchers. A lot of posters may act like defense doesn't count, but Piniella is pretty big on defense. And he apparently is unhappy with both Theriot and DeRosa at SS. If they carry an extra bench guy, it will likely be a SS, probably Cedeno or else Perez.

Billy Butler could make Mike Sweeney expendable by the all-star break.

He has to be expendable, Billy Butler cannot possibly step on a field. Ever.

And people complain about Dunn's defense.

I think he's still enough of an upgrade over Shealy that he needs to be playing first in interleague games... but that's about it.

Guzman looks phenomenal. If he's not the fifth starter, he should be the swing man.

No question about it...

pretty sure len just said "baker used a major league record 542 relievers" last season

He did, he was quoting BP

I get the new BP when I go home tomorrow! :D

Guzman looks very good today. He definitely should be the leader for the fifth starter. It's going to be interesting to read Lou's comments after today.

I'm leaning towards Lou talking about the improvements in Prior. The situation with Angel has been flying under the radar until recently (and part of it was discovered on an off the record discussion with Santo on Gameday Audio). The beat writers have been reporting Guzman's chances as a long shot (while focusing mostly on Prior, Miller, and Cotts). On the other hand, if Lou speaks glowingly of Angel's performance, it can be interpreted that he is the clear favorite.

He does seem like a better option than cotts doesnt he. THats the only reason cotts would make it.

All these lucky hits by Tomas Perez are starting to worry me. I was hoping we'd release him outright by now.

Guzman was pretty much operating only with his fastball there today, which makes the ground balls pretty impressive.

We'll see when he can get his curve going consistently.

If I have to listen to much more of Plesac, I'm going to be longing for the days of Joe Carter.

Joe Carter...wow what a statement, hahah

Well... Carter had some personality, didn't he? I can't quite remember why I hated him so much.
