I love this lineup...

My only complaint is that Jones is in against a lefty (aren't we up against Zito?), but I guess they aren't going to sit him in the first game either...

But, like I said, it's the first spring game. So...

Let's not get too excited. Murton might only be playing, and in the two hole, because we're facing a lefty. Which is a major bummer.

I like the fact that Lou is putting out a productive lineup. I have no problem with him putting out a Floyd-Jones OF against a righty and let's wait and see how productive and healthy they all remain.

That's my guess as well. I think Murton will be playing against some-right handers, but I don't know how often he'll be in the 2 spot against them. Even if he bats in the 2 spot against left-handers though, that's still an improvement though and one that was unexpected (considering that there have been rumors about 3 possible people in the 2 spot, and Murton was not one of those hitters).

Piniella has said that he's not going to use derosa in the OF.

A Bruce update!!

Bruce Miles / The Daily Herald[/url]"]

Zito is a lefty, and that’s no doubt why Murton is batting second. When the Cubs face a right-handed pitcher this spring, Cliff Floyd figures to start, with DeRosa batting second.

Early this morning, pitcher Mark Prior threw a simulated game and looked sharp. He’s scheduled to start next Monday against the Seattle Mariners at Peoria, Ariz.

I'm still getting used to midday updates from Bruce and the DH. Nice to see.

If Murton does obviously better than others in the 2 spot, against lefties or anybody else. Lou will see that and bat him there more. That is why it's so awesome just to see him TRYING it.

I sure hope Bruce meant "certain right-handed pitchers this spring" because the numbers that Murton has put up against righties are solid.

Piniella did say he is a stat guy a couple of days ago, and this line-up seems to back that up. My guess/hope is that the decision to start Floyd over Murton will be based on the individual match-up against the pitcher or in some cases the team (sometimes hitters just don't fare well against a certain team or in a certain park) and not a straight righty/lefty platoon. The health of the player will of course also be a factor. Yet another thing I will be anxiously watching this spring.

In any case, it is great to see Murton chosen to bat 2nd in any situation after the way Dusty filled the two hole. Also, it just goes to show that lists like the one of which Cubs were being considered for the two slot that were appearing in the papers (most of which did not include Murton) should be taken with a big ol' grain of salt. Unless Bruce Miles is writing them, of course.

I know that. I was just laying out what the options were because he asked who could start in place of Jones against a lefty.

It's hard to know what to read into that statement. Floyd's got to get some at bats in the spring too. Floyd starting against righties could just as easily mean Piniella doesn't think Floyd can hit lefties as it could mean he thinks Murton isn't good against righties.
