I know PFT is not the most reliable of places, so this could be completely false. However, they do break things from time to time, so I just thought that I'd throw this out there:

With Lovie Smith being the lowest-paid head coach in the NFL and no signs of any impending effort to provide him with fair market value, we're told that at least one veteran member of the Bears is telling at least one potential free-agent target not to sign with the team.

It could be a sign of things to come for the Bears, unless and until they get Smith's contract status resolved. We've previously heard that many veterans plan to refuse to do any contract restructurings or other business with the team.

PFT nails another one.

Well, I did say that it wasn't that trustworthy, cut me some slack here :D

That's great news to hear about Lovie's extension-he's a great coach, and he will continue to serve you well. I'm very happy for all of you.

Lovie will finish his remaining contract but receive a $2 million signing bonus. He then gets $20 million over the following 4 seasons.

Hooray! Now sign Briggs to a fair deal.

The Bears want to, but Briggs/and Rosenhals want a deal bigger then Brian Urlacher. So if I am the Bears, I would seriously talk to teams about a Briggs deal. I mean, I believe Briggs will follow Colvin/Holdman as players who should thank Urlacher for making their careers.

That's a good deal for Lovie. Not so sure about giving Angelo a six year extension, however.

Why? Hes the best GM in Chicago.

Yeah I have no problems at all with Angelo's deal. Of course Flames24Rulz wouldn't like it....he's a packer fan :)

Lovie probably could have got 6 mil on the open market next season.

Good work Bears, keep Mike McCaskey locked in the janitors closet.

Nothing with being a Packer fan. I would just be unwilling to give ANY GM a six year extension.

The Packers should have given Ron Wolfe a 30 year extension. Dude was $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Especially after he dropped that silly "e" from the end of his name.

He doesn't deserve 8 million a year, his scheme is actually pretty shi**y on the whole, but he motivated the team, got them in shape, and held them accountable. (Unlike Jauron)

Glad we can stop listening to the press whine and cry about Lovie and "his money."

This deal was a foregone conclusion from the beginning.

I dunno if I agree with that given how stupidly the McCaskeys have conducted themselves in the recent past (does any major sports city have as many "ify" owners as Chicago?), but I am very happy that Lovie is getting what he deserves.

The Bears have been run completely differently ever since Virginia backhanded her son. I don't know why the national media insists on calling this franchise cheap for honoring contracts and why so many locals still think it's 1988.

This is the best run organization in town. They work smart, take calculated risks and spend big when they need to.

I don't even think Virigina knows what year it is. I'm convinced someone else within the organization is having an influence on football operations(i.e keeping Michael locked down stairs). Possibly the McKenna's?

Virginia cracked me up during the Halas Trophy presentation.

It's Angelo, and Phillips.

Why is this so difficult for people to understand? The Bears haven't been cheap, as goony says, since McCaskey stepped back and Angelo was given full-time GM control. It's old news. Repeating it over & over doesn't make it new.

Who fired Mike McCaskey? It wasn't Virginia I can tell you that. Someone forced that move.

LOL @ PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT.

no signs of any impending effort to provide him with fair market value

the thing that gets me is that they didn't even need to give him "fair market value" as he was never on the market. they had a closed negotiation going on, lovie was never a free agent.

the bears proved to be more than fair.

Fair market value is based on what other coaches have received with extensions. Coaches don't go on the FA market very often, as teams give their coaches about what other similar coaches have gotten. Lovie's deal is very fair-in fact, it's very similar to the deal Dungy got a couple of years ago.

No it isn't. Fair market value is based on what the market is willing to give you. If you don't hit the market, there's no judging of what that market is. Coaches hit free agency all the time. College coaches are virtual free agents at all times, as are most coordinators. Then you have your steady supply of former head coaches not under contract.

Yes, it is-and Lovie would have been paid by a team. Just as we know what Z's approximate value by looking at similar players even though he has not hit the market yet, so we can know Lovie's market value by looking at what similar successful coaches have received.

You and I honor contracts. People who work in professional sports do not. You know it and I know it.

I'll stop thinking that the McCaskeys are truly running the show when they finally stop tripping all over themselves. There is no reason they could not have gotten this done earlier. There is no reason to name Dave McGinnis as your coach before he accepts the position. There is no reason that a major mkt team like this one should be 20 mill under the cap every year.
