He will know with the Cubs lurking at three it would be advantageous to do that. I don't know if he's going to or not. If Price falls to the Cubs and Wieters does as well I would expect them to take Wieters over Price unless Price undergoes a Mark Prior transformation. If that happens I doubt his demands would make TB or PIT back down though.

I want Wieters; we have enough young pitchers. But, I'm putting my money on us getting Brackman by default. I simply cannot see Tampa (which so desperately needs pitching) passing up Price, and KC (which has quite a few young pitchers now) needs a catcher. They'll take Wieters, and we end up with Brackman.

The Royals won't come right out and say it, but they've given up on John Buck, they acquired Jason LaRue from the Reds to hold them over some. Wieters makes way too much sense for KC.

I wish you could "trade down" in the baseball draft like in football, I'd trade the #3 to a team that needs someone like Brackman in exchange for a lower 1st round pick and a 2nd rounder, then maybe we could start filling in all of our position player holes in the minor leagues.

Filling holes is an awful strategy, just take the BPA. You don't know what's going to happen to players already in the system in the future and there's no point in sacrificing talent and ability for filling a need in your system.

I would also add "assuming signability".

Well the Rays haven't spent much on major league talent, but they haven't ever been shy about paying their draft picks. Assuming everything stays where it is now (which is never the case) I don't see the Rays passing on Price.
Posted
Why not? They passed on Andrew Miller.

Perhaps they had Longoria as their BPA. Sure they could use pitching, but Longoria looks to be a stud for many many years if his first year of pro ball is any indication.

Well if you believe what management says, the Rays did have Longoria as their BPA. It's not like the Rays have no pitching prospects to speak of. Jeff Niemann, Jacob McGee, Wade Davis, Matt Walker, Jeremy Hellickson, Andrew Sonnanstine, etc isn't a terrible group.

They did draft Miller in '03, albeit in the 3rd round. I think it was pretty clear at that time he was headed to UNC. I would think the Rays will do what they always do and go with whoever they think is the best overall player. Should they feel that way about Price, he will be the pick. Just my opinion though. Who knows what could happen between now and June.

Then the Rays are a very good match to make a nice trade with the Cubs.

please for the love of God just pick a college guy with a good chance at becoming a solid major leaguer... no more of this luis montanez, ryan harvey crap

I hope Weiters falls to us.

Longoria had a much better season than most expected, I would think Miller was rated higher but he fell for a reason.

I saw Longoria in Montgomery a few times last year. The dude can hit, but he had a ball get through the 5 hole and made a few erratic throws to first. He was very impressive though.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I see David Price being that guy and tryign to dick over Major League teams.

What is this in reference to?

I think this post was suppose to be in the Hardaway thread.

That fact that I've met, hung out with and spent time with David Price and still talk to him every once in a while. He's a very humble human being. He doesn't even like the spotlight.

But, what is this in reference to? You are referencing something in your response, but I have no idea what it is. You didn't quote whoever you are responding to. David Price is too humble and nice to do what? In what way would he be too nice and humble to screw over teams?

I'm guessing it has something to do with holding out.

Maybe this quote, from two weeks ago:

Price if he runs out a big contract demand. I honestly believe it. His demands could be so that he tries to price himself out of Tampa's and KC's price range.

Oh, okay.

Tampa and KC are teams that I could see skimming past the top picks to get the top high school players. It's not necessarily signability issues by the player demands per se, but also the fact those smaller market teams may not want to fork out the huge signing bonuses.

Tampa did shed some contract this past season, but they have some guys who will start earning the big dollars soon enough. KC spent a huge wad this offseason.

When the Cubs got Prior, Minnesota went with Joe Mauer instead. Local high school kid they knew they could sign, and for much cheaper that the Cubs paid for Prior.

San Diego did the same thing with Matt Bush a year or two later.

If Tampa or KC takes Price, they are going to have to pay a premium for Price. They know that up front. Price still has to agree to a deal, but I don't see any of this as a negative on Price.
