At the Palmer House Hilton on Friday, Williams again stressed the White Sox won’t be wild spenders on pitching, even if it’s for a proven workhorse like Buehrle.

“Is there going to be a pitcher around here that gets some of the dollars and the years that have been out there?’’ Williams said. “Very, very unlikely, unless something dramatic happens to where we don’t have any options. And what we try to do is give ourselves options, and we think we’ve done a (heck) of a job of it over the last year.’’

“From the quotes from Kenny, I want to come back, but I’ve seen direct quotes saying that Mark Buehrle won’t be in a White Sox uniform in 2008,’’ Buehrle said. “So I’m just kind of going off what he said.’’

Buehrle was standing in the same hotel ballroom with Williams on Friday afternoon, but he didn’t appear eager to discuss his future with the GM.

“I haven’t had a chance to sit down and talk to him, and I probably won’t either,’’ Buehrle said. “There’s nothing I can do about it. Just go out there and pitch this season. Either good or bad, he’s pretty much said I’m not going to be back.’’

I would bet he will be a Cardinal.

Yeah, I think so.

What touched plenty of nerves on the South Side was the photo of Buehrle attending the 2006 World Series wearing a St. Louis Cardinals cap. This isn't the first time the Missouri native has professed his love for the Cardinals, but the camera-phone photo on the Internet of Buehrle living it up at Busch Stadium in another team's cap was a shocker.

Any regrets?

''No,'' Buehrle said without hesitation. ''Actually, the only regrets I have about that is the guy getting on the Internet on one of those Web sites and talking crap, saying he was sitting next to my wife [Jamie] and that she was saying she hopes Kenny doesn't pick me back up so we can go to St. Louis. That's like the furthest thing from her mind, going to St. Louis. She doesn't want me playing there ever. This guy just made all this crap up, lying.

''She got on [the site] and chewed the guy out, and the guy apologized for it. He was a Cubs fan sitting next to us in the stands. We were like, 'What are you doing down here?' So I took a picture with him on his camera phone, then he blew it up.

''I'm up in the upper deck, drinking a beer at a Cards game. I'm a Cardinals fan. I had my hat on. I'm a Cardinals fan; I always will be. But people were thinking, 'Oh, he's a Cardinals fan. He's more apt to go there.' My heart's here in Chicago.''

Only a Cardinals fan could turn a spat between the White Sox and the Cardinals into the Cubs fault.

I know. It's not the Cubs fault that Buehlre showed up at a Cardinals game, in a Cardinal hat. All Buehrle is trying to misdirect the negative news onto the Cubs fan, instead of "manning up" and taking it off the chin.

With Gonzalez, Floyd, Danks, and Haeger with another year of experience under their belts, losing him and getting the picks as well as the salary relief might help them more than hurt them. Of course, if Buehrle can't find the command of him change-up again, the team that signs him will be the ones regretting it. Edited by UK

Kinda makes sense now why they traded away Garcia and McCarthy. Looks like Buerhle will not be coming back next year.

Yeah, I don't believe it. What self respecting Cubs fan would be caught dead at a Cardinals' playoff/WS game? Buehrle evoking the Cubs name is a way to get both (Sox and Cards) fans united against a common enemy.
