What else do you need to know?

How is he ever going to get a chance to show people any improvement running the practice squad and being inactive every week?

Look around the league. How many #3's are seeing serious time?

How would Orton ever get to a point with the Bears that he would see serious time? There won't even be a QB competition next year. Probably not the year after, either. Grossman/Griese is set. That's the combo that just got you to a Super Bowl.

Think Orton wants to run practice squads for the rest of his career? I'll bet there's a lower-tier team that would give him a shot at the #2.

Lots of QB's progress up the ranks from backup status. Orton doesn't have to run practice squads the rest of his career. But he could end up being a nice Mike Tomczak style longterm backup role with the Bears. Griese may or may not be back next year. I don't think it's a guarantee he's better than Kyle by then. Orton can progress via practice and studying. He's under contract, isn't he? A 3rd string QB doesn't have much leverage to force a team to move him.

I think you're being entirely too impatient with this situation. There's no need to do anything with Kyle right now. Even if they keep the same 1/2/3 next year, Griese is definitely not coming back for a 3rd year as the backup. By 2008, at 26, Orton could be the proverbial heartbeat away from the starting job. I definitely think that he would have to consider that a very nice career trend for him.

A 3rd string QB doesn't have any leverage to unseat a veteran backup who can still play such as Griese.

BTW, where are you getting this Griese leaving stuff? The guy is signed for big dollars for years to come.

Griese will not play out his contract. His contract was a classic, "we'll sign you at 5years.. and cut you at 3 years" Either they will restructure it at some point down the road, or they will cut him. A 5 million dollar cap hit for a backup qb is too much, even if the cap keeps going up like it is. Of course, all that assumes... Grossman is still healthy still QBing the crap out of this team in 09.

Reported by Bill Polian on a radio show, Nick Harper "worked out today and looked good". He didn't specify what type of workouts, but that's still encouraging news.

I think CNNSI's "Dr. Z" is actually insane.

He is being highly critical of the Bears near loss to Arizona. Yet Indy did lose 4 times, to teams that were anywhere from mediocre to bad.

This guy has been wrong so often on SI for as long as I can remember. I actually think he has made a name for himself by being so inapt.

He's acting like that's the blueprint to beat the Bears. One: The Cardinals lost and Two: That game was a LONG time ago. If it was the blueprint on how to beat the Bears, they probably wouldn't have romped their way to the superbowl.

Colts lost to the Texans and I have a feeling that the Bears probably aren't furiously studying the tape of that game.

Bears as the worst team last year was just beyond absurd. I thought they were a lock for about a 9-7 season. That team stood no chance of being worst in the league. he has admitted in the past that he has had problems with people in the organization, both past and present.

Picking them to lose to Indy is perfectly reasonable. They should be the underdog, and I don't even think 7 points is absurd. But Z is acting as if the Bears stand no chance. He's such an NFC east homer it's shocking when he's able to talk about any team outside the area.

Polian is a good or better as any GM I've ever seen in the NFL.

He's a big reason why I stopped reading that magazine years ago. I just can't stand reading uneducated drivel from a person who is getting paid to know what he's talking about.

This is one thing that Colts fans and Bears fans can agree on-most Colts fans take absolutely no stock in any of his predictions whatsoever-he could flip a coin and probably get better results than he does.

Orton is young and cheap. If the Bears feel like they can get the same production out of him that they could from Griese, that's all the leverage necessary.

If Orton is unhappy being third string, how do you think Griese feels about being 2nd string?

The thing is, he's convinced that he is the only guy out there really studying the game. He claims to be an extremely thorough, meat and potatoes instead of fluff and nonsense kind of expert. Yet he's routinely just dead wrong on many issues.

Then he's like a newscaster studying "The National Equirer" for news information because I could never figure out where he was getting his facts from.

I can't wait until the Bears shut some more idiots up on February 4th.

It's one thing to favor the Colts. That's fine, but the blatant disregard for the Bears' chances in this game is flat out ridiculous. I want the Bears to shut some more of these jerkoffs up.

Has this been posted yet? My apologies if it has. What an a-hole? I don't recall having seen something so blatantly anti-Grossman/Bears yet. What worthless tripe.

A couple decent points in that article, but mostly simply awful. I wonder if he wrote the things like the X factor and so on at the bottom-from those, it seems like that person gives the Bears more of a chance. I wonder if he completely believes what he's writing, or is trying to be sensational.

HA HA

For the record, that article shouldn't be substituted for reputable sports services that are all saying it will be a great game.

Did you see his all pro team? He basically watches a few games then arbitrarily assigns numerical values to certian plays then so he can come up with a number grade for players. Because, you know, numbers make things scientific. Briggs just missed with a 5.7? Huh???

The dude is seriously nuts, I've come to that conclusion.

Specifically I was referring to the coverage on the NFL Network.

Sorry, I'm not a subscriber to SI.

Well, it's in the NFL network's best interest to pump up the possibility of a great game.

SI.com has provided several "bears have no chance" type articles.

Wow, Dr.Z is really infuriating. He flat out said that if the Bears win he wont give them respect and it'll just be virtue of luck.

We can't even prove the guy wrong with a victory? Thats absurd.
