Wait, he just quit the Dallas job to take the Arkansas job

Not that it matters to Saban, but that job isn't open.

Yet. Just wait.

The Bears are the cheapest franchise in the league. Lovie is the lowest paid coach. You think management is suddenly going to pony up big cash?
Yes. They have to keep him at all costs and I think they know that.

The Cowboys have reportedly hired Jason Garrett, but no one is sure for what.

It's rumored he's the OC, but some have said he could even end up the head coach. I think that might be a disaster, but Garrett as OC and Wade Phillips as a HC might not be a bad deal.

I doubt it, especially since Rivera isn't on the same page as Angelo and isn't big on the Cover-2. Why is Lovie the lowest paid coach? Because he's on his first coaching contract, it doesn't necessarily mean the Bears are cheap (they are).

The Bears are right up against the cap and have spent big money on all kinds of free agents, from Ogun to Moose to Tait.

You're talking ancient history my friend.

Bears will pay Lovie. I loved Phillips' comments. Word to other teams: STAY CLEAR, we're not playing that game.

Oh, and by the way: I'm sensing almost everyone has forgotten it was Lovie who decided not to talk contract until after the season.

The Cowboys have hired Jason Garrett to be the offensive coordinator and he is still in the running for head coach, though it is belived Wade Phillips will be the choice there.

The Cowboys have hired Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett as their offensive coordinator, and he remains a candidate for Dallas' vacant head coaching position, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports.

A source told ESPN's Ed Werder on Wednesday night that team owner Jerry Jones considers Garrett, a former backup to quarterback Troy Aikman, to be one of the most promising offensive coaches in the league and was so determined to bring him back to the Cowboys organization that he would have been added to Parcells' staff had Parcells decided to coach the final year of his contract.

It's now up to the Cowboys whether to appoint Garrett as the head coach later after interviews with other head coach candidates, primarily San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips or San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Isn't Wade Phillips kind of a.....you know....blah choice for Jones?

I dunno, Wade's just never really done anything for me. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Garrett is being groomed as the future HC. It's speculated now that Jones will look at a defensive minded coach.

Of course, I just got an email that over the last few days Jimmy Johnson has been seen around the ranch and that over the years he and Jones have become friends again.

Jimmy needs some extra money eh?

what happens if the new head coach doesn't want Garrett as their OC? And why would a coach want to take a job when they know another member of their staff is being groomed to take the very job I was considering?

If the coach was an old-timer who only wanted to stay for a couple years, it would make sense.

After emailing another friend, the word is that Johnson is serving as a consultant to Jones in the search. Nothing seems to be indicating that Johnson will be considered.

It would be interesting to see if Jimmy still has what it takes.

I know. I love the tone Phillips used. He was clearly agtitated by the rumors that the Cowboys were interested in Smith, if you read between the lines, you could tell Phillips threaten the Cowboys/Jones with tampering charge, without Phillips saying those exact words. The Cowboys have no shot at Lovie now, considering they went about it the wrong way.

Now, Pete Carroll would be somebody Jones is interested in. I mean, with the possible sanctions that USC COULD be facing, Pete Carroll may look to jump back to the NFL.

Lovie isn't going to the Cowboys.

and Nick Saben is not going to Alabama ;-)

Huh? Lovie Smith =/= Nick Saban

Just a joke, no connection between the two.

When the Bears were conducting the head coach search that ultimately resulted in hiring Mike Ditka, Halas made it clear that whoever was hired had to be willing to work with Buddy Ryan as defensive coordinator. Similarly, when the Cubs hired Dusty as manager it was clear that whoever was hired would have to accept Rothschild as pitching coach. It may be similar with the Cowboys; the new head coach may not have any choice but to work with Garrett.

Also, the Dolphins hired Dom Capers as D coordinator before Cam Cameron. It happens quite a bit.

I know. It just seems to offend the sensibilities though. Most prospective head coaches are going to want to bring in their group of guys. It could limit the choices that are available.

Still---that doesn't mean it can't work.

According to the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, Norv Turner is the front-runner for the Dallas head coaching position.

Yeah, really. How the heck is this guy such a hot commodity every season?

Mike Singletary is next to interview for the Cowboys HC positon.

Link.

This is quite surprising. Most insiders believed the job was down to either Phillips or Turner with Garrett who will be the OC if not head coach a long shot.

Perhaps Jerry Jones just wants to abide by the Rooney Rule? That was what I immediately thought of.

They already met the Rooney Rule standard when they interviewed in-house candidate Bowles.

A lot of people think that Jones wants to hire Norv as HC and somehow convince the 49ers to let Singletary take the DC position.
