new playoff seeding says division winners aren't automatically the Top 3, but they are guaranteed homecourt in the first round, right? So a division winner can't be seeded lower than 4th?

A division winner has to be 4th or better, yes. They are not guaranteed home court advantage though-home court in the NBA goes to the team with the better record, not the team with the better seed.

so what's the point of being the 4th seed if the 5th seed gets home court over you?

Well, it's not really about being the 4th seed for home court-if they didn't put that rule saying they couldn't slip any farther, than a team could win its division and be the 7th or 8th seed and have to play one of the top 2 teams in the first round. Being the 4th seed means they at least only have to play the 4th best team in conference at best (because the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seeds would have better records than the 5th seed). That's the advantage a division winner gets in not having to face a top team right away-they don't necessarily get homecourt though.

right, i guess that's true. So the good news is that if the Bulls stay stuck at #5, they could have home court over Toronto, for example, should the records stay similar to now

Yup-and that wouldn't really be a bad scenario for the Bulls. It would mean that they would have to play the Pistons in the 2nd round, but as for first round matchups I think I'd rather have the 5 seed with homecourt than have the 3 seed and play Miami.

Story

Kobe has been suspended for tonight's game against Milwaukee for striking the Wolves Marko Jaric in the head. The play was virtually identical to the play he was suspended for earlier this year where he struck Manu Ginobili. I don't agree with the suspension, and didn't agree with the first one, but I realize that the NBA did it because they suspended him the first time. It's still crap though.

The 4th seed could end up playing the 3rd best team in the conference, actually. For instance, let's say the top eight records in the eastern conference end up in the following order, from best to worst:

Pistons

Cavs

Bulls

Wizards

Heat

Raptors

Pacers

Magic

The seeds would looks like:

1. Pistons

2. Cavs

5. Bulls

3. Wizards

6. Heat

4. Raptors

7. Pacers

8. Magic

That's true-that's usually a pretty unlikely scenario (that one division would have the best 3 teams in the conference) but I guess it could happen this year.

yeah yeah yeah, Cavs win in Auburn Hills

It's too bad Gibson got hurt, he seemed to really be blossoming at the point. I really like that Brown doesn't start Snow, and just goes with Hughes, Pavlovic, and James as guards.

Mavs lead the Lakers by 29 in the third as they go for 17 in a row!

Re-Dirk-u-lous!

Dirk for MVP!

Just lose two more games. Please.

Just think what their record would be if they didn't start off at 1-3 or something along those lines. That's unreal.

And have only lost 5 games since then.

The Mavs were 11-4 in November, 13-3 in December, 14-2 in January, and 10-0 in February. For March, they are 4-0. Their last lost was on January 25. Their last home loss was December 7th.

This is a dominant team. Go Mavs.

During the football season, they complain about the Dolphins people doing it, and then when it comes to basketball season, what do they do? :D

It'd be something if MJ, Pippen, Rodman and Kukoc got together and popping open champaign to celebrate the Mavs losing. But hey, what's wrong with us fans doing it?

You're just a jealous Pacers fan. ;)

Nah, the Pacers had some great runs-I'm more of a journey than a destination kind of guy. It has been kind of frustrating though to lose in the ECF in 7 games 3 times, in 6 games twice, and in the Finals in 6 games once all in the last 12 years. They did give the Bulls the best fight that anybody has ever put up against them though in a 7 game series.

Besides, if I wanted to do the same thing I could always do it with IU:)

I knew something like this was bound to happen. At some point I figured Kobe would just say "I'm tired of losing, screw the triangle, I'm taking over." Hopefully this can get the Lakers back on the winning track since in the last five weeks they had lost 13 of 16 including 6 and 7 game losing streaks.

Did he elbow anyone in the head tonight?

Did another Illinois basketball player get another DUI last night?
