This isn't basketball and one player can't completely change a franchise. Last time I checked, Sammy wasn't a part of the pitching staff and was only one of nine hitters in the lineup. There's only so much he can do. He singlehandedly led the Cubs to the playoffs in 1998 and almost did it again in 2001.

Either one player can't be responsible for the success of the team or he can. We can't have it both ways just to support Sammy.

It's semantics. One player can't completely change a franchise like in basketball. When Cleveland got LeBron, he instantly changed their franchise. Sammy couldn't change the Cubs. His phenomenal years in 1998 and 2001 led/almost led the Cubs to the playoffs despite the rest of the roster being, average at best.

While we're at it, can people stop calling Jason Marquis (or anybody, for that matter) a "douchebag?" What has he done? Nowhere has he been quoted saying he wants No. 21. It's all been speculation. Let's see what happens.

Don't you read the boards? He's this years Jacque Jones. He can do no good and will be run out of town at the end of the season.

Since you've got a cool hockey thing going, I likened the No. 21 situation to a couple of other hockey things in a column last Tuesday.

Excellent column. I think it's no big deal if Jason Marquis wears number 21 or not. But as you said in your column he'll be under enough pressure.

Thanks. It was one of those off-the-cuff things I did just for fun. I look for the Cubs and Sammy to kiss and make up, perhaps sooner rather than later. Too many good things happened along the way.

The game Sammy left during may have been incosequential because the team was out of the race, but it WAS fan appreciation day. Sammy was always in it for himself.

And there were plenty of other beloved Cubs who we aren't mad about jersey doubling. Murton wears Dawson's #19. Mabry wore Grace's #17. Ted Lilly will wear Fegie Jenkins' #31.

And the fact that Marquis was a Cardinal shouldn't even come into the dicussion. That's a fan thing, not a front office thing. You think McDonough shouldn't sign/trade for a former Cardinal if he thinks that player can help the team? Get over it.

Ted Lilly will wear #30.

Why is this topic 4 pages long? Why are people so into this?

Exactly. And when it's all said and done, I believe the point will be moot. My guess is that Marquis won't mess with 21 and the Cubs eventually will retire it.

I hope the Cubs will eventually retire the number, I'm afraid that too many bridges were burned.

Time heals a lot of wounds. Plus, I doubt 10-15 yrs from now the front office will look completely different. I doubt they will care.

okay. he was listed as #31 on the Cubs Roster on espn.com

sorry for the mistake on Dawson. You can sub my "Murton wears Dawson's #19" with "Barrett wears Dawson's #8" and my point stands

I'm not a big Marquis fan, and I hate the signing, but I'm going to give him a chance. However, I think he could win a LOT of respect from fans if he came out and said that he was taking a different number.

why does he have to? I seriously don't get it. If you're going to hate a player for taking an available number (which happens to be the number they have always worn) then you are being petty

Where did I say he had to or that I would hate him for taking it? I said "I'm going to give him a chance" and all I said was he could win a lot of respect if he didn't take it.

I don't want Marquis to take #21 and I wish the Cubs would advise him to choose another number.

However, Marquis posts a 6.05 ERA while making 7million/per that's going to be my reason to not like him, not his choice of numbers.

But thats so logical.

One can only hope.

Jason Marquis getting run out of town means he sucked. why do you want that to happen? so you can say "I told you so?" I for one don't particularly like the signing, but surely hope he succeeds as a Cub.

sports fans are petty. you can question why it is that way, but that's the way it is, so you might as well deal with it the best you can.

Dawson didn't wear #19, Lilly isn't wearing #31, and McDonough doesn't handle signings or trades.

Now, with that said... this isn't about not signing a player because he played for the Cards. Who said anything in this thread about signing Marquis? We're talking about what number he might wear. It's about having respect for a player who was the only reason to watch the Cubs for several years. And then you add the fact that Marquis is a former Cardinal, and that just makes it even worse.

This will be known as the Marquis Rebellion.

Yes, I already admitted to the first two mistakes. I misspoke on the third.

You totally contradict yourself. You say "no one said anything about not signing a player because he played for the Cards," yet a few sentences later say that "you add the fact that Marquis is a former Cardinal" making it worse. Which is it?

It's a god damn #. I for one welcome Marquis to the Cubs, and root for him to have a GREAT year as a Cub, and if he want's 21, then he can have it. If you want to HONOR your past players. Raise flags with their NAMES. Say RON SANTO played here, We salute SAMMY SOSA, formor great Cub. It's a #. It's a NUMBER.

Didn't Marquis wear a different # with the Braves?

I can't disagree more. To an most athletes a number is the way you are identified. You may not think it's a big deal, but retiring numbers is something that has been done for players to honor them. That's just the way it is.

And since that is the way it is, there is reason to take offense if someone is given the same number as a GREAT. I don't want to see anyone in #21 just as I'm glad that I never saw another #23 after Ryno. It's just a way of showing your appreciation as an organization to a franchise player.

What? That's not contradicting myself at all. We're talking about what number he will wear. It's bad enough to give Sammy's old number to another player period. The fact that the other player is a former member of our rivals is an even harder smack in the face.

The first statement of mine that you have quoted is in regards to player acquisition, the second is in regards to something completely unrelated.

never mind the fact that Marquis didn't play for the Cardinals while Sammy wore #21

and either way, management shouldn't decided who can/can't wear numbers based on what their former team was. The Cubs vs. Cardinals rivalry is much more about the fans than the players or front offices
