Alex Rodriguez-3B-Yankees Dec. 16 - 12:52 pm et

Alex Rodriguez told Bob Costas in a nationally syndicated radio interview in September that he might retire once his current 10-year contract expires after the 2010 season.

It's news now because no one heard it then, apparently. "I don’t really see myself playing past this contract," Rodriguez said in the interview three months ago. At the time, he was likely frustrated with the way his season had progressed. "I believe he was speaking honestly from the frame of mind that he was in at the time," Costas said in a telephone interview yesterday. "He was very matter of fact and there was no anger in his voice. It was a tone of resignation." Considering that A-Rod has been adamant recently that he wants to stay in New York, it seems doubtful that he feels quite the same way. There's little chance that A-Rod will call it a career at age 35.

I don't think he'll go through with this.

I added the last three words to the title of the thread because I think there's a huge difference between retiring before next season and retiring in 2010.

Yeah, I didn't think about that, but probably a good idea!

Hmm... interesting that he'd want to retire at 35. I would figured, him being in the AL, that he can extend his career longer by playing the DH position, which would save some wear and tear of his body.

And since we have two topics, I merged the two (just a mod with nothing better to do on Saturday). Baseball Discussions seems more appropriate.

Nice work my friend. Nice work. *Pats on the back of your shoulder*

No way he retires. He's potentailly going to put up some of the best career numbers in history, and he wants to call it quits before he can do that? I don't believe it for a second. Once he gets out of New York he'll be ready to play till he's 45 (figuratively speaking)

I think he just needs a trade to a city that will show him more love. :D

Rodriguez posted the lowest WARP of his career in 2006 (5.5). Comparatively, Aramis Ramirez posted a 5.8 WARP in 2006, the highest of his career. Just shows you how good of a career Rodriguez has had to this point. I think he will rebound to 2005 levels next year.

I am also considering retirement in 2010.

Also, I think I will eat more strawberries starting in that year. And leafy greens.

I've got a good recipe for roasted potatoes with spinach leaves and rosemary garlic butter that might interest you in four more years.
