Should the Cubs Do Anything if Marcus Giles is Non-Tendered?

My guess is he ends up in San Diego, with Walker as the super-sub.

 

I'll give 3:1 odds BBB is correct

I would have preferred either Giles or Loretta at 2B with a 1-2 year contract to what we have in DeRossa - hope he proves me wrong, but I don't generally like paying lots of $ for a guy who has a career year and tying him up for 3 years.

 

Loretta would have been a very solid offensive and defensive addition imho.

 

I personally would be happy to have Giles here, but I think the Cubs feel they are set on the infield and wouldn't even make an offer to him if he's non-tendered.

While the rumor-an-hour mill continues grinding, the Braves face a very real decision Tuesday that’s probably already been made and may well offend a significant segment of their fan base.

 

Marcus Giles fans, of which there are plenty, have a difficult time understanding why the Braves might actually non-tender the plucky second baseman. Tuesday is the deadline for teams to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players or make them free agents eligible to sign with any team.

 

If they non-tender Giles, a 2003 All-Star whose production has since slipped steadily, the Braves will get nothing in the way of compensation from any team that signs him. And folks, barring a late trade, it does appear the Braves are going to non-tender him.

The only question would be is DeRosa good enough to play SS full-time. I see he's played there occasionally over the years, but nowhere near full-time. How is his defense? Is it good enough to play SS full-time? That's all I'd worry about. Anything to get Izturis out of the starting lineup is fine by me.

On a more serious note, I could have sworn I typed "in the big toe" after "needs to be shot." It was an attempt at being humorous, but finals season stress has my brain shorting out and I guess I just got sidetracked before I typed it. Rest assured, I was not seriously advocating non-funny violence on Jim Hendry.

SS DeRosa/Theriot/Izturis

 

1) Mark DeRosa is a 31-year-old career .260/.316/.366 hitter of right-handers, and on account of that absolutely should not even be considered for a full-time job

2) Mark DeRosa is has spent just 175 innings (or 20 full games) at shortstop over the last three years, and it's for good reasons

Heh, iirc data suggests that right handed platoon splits really aren't sustainable or are insignificant, though in DeRosa's case it would work in the other direction where he starts to hit worse against lefties and stays the same against righties.

 

I guess the best rational justification of that argument is that all of the righties who can't hit righties get weeded out in the minors since there are so many righties and the lefties who can't hit southpaws survive because of the low concentration of left-handed talent.

With DeRosa's ability to play all over the field, there shouldn't be a reason not to pursue Giles.

 

Other than the reason DeRosa came to Chicago was to start at 2B.

 

We're not getting Giles. I really, really want us to. He was my pick for 2B at the start of the offseason. It's not going to happen. :(
