The way this offseason has gone so far, I'll put stock into something once Ken Rosenthal mentions it, not until. He's been on top of everything and has pretty much scooped each deal out there.

Gammons has been taking it easy. Ken used to just get his leftovers.

I'm on board for this type of acquisition. My guess is that it's either a ST Invite (probably a little early for that type of deal) or a one-year deal with incentives ala Dempster / Williamson. I don't see this signing holding the Cubs back from still looking at impact players for the staff or the field because Marquis will not make more than $2Million this year. It will probably include a team option of $4-5M for next year with a buyout in case he pans out.

Marquis is terrible. He's not worth $2 million. Go after Suppan now.

Maybe it helps us get Suppan?!? BTW, I don't think you can judge Marquis soley on his performance last year either. His previous two seasons were not bad at all and to get a guy with that type of potential for a million or two would not be bad at all. It's very low risk because he won't be guaranteed a large salary or a spot in the rotation.

There's no need to go low risk again. We need a solid pitcher. His K/BB ratio sucks, and his ERA+, sans two years, sucks. Miller is our low-risk guy, we need to fill the rotation with solid, durable pitchers (like Suppan or Penny)

Penny's not going to happen. I would bet that Suppan is Hendry's next target.

Isn't Jim still basically in the hospital?

I know you can do some work on the phones, but an actual new deal getting done before he's back on his feet is probably a stretch.

Amazing article. I don't know about the rest of you, but while the results may always be criticized, I will never doubt Jimbo's desire to get the job done ever again.

I still think it would be hard to start a completely new deal and move it all the way through to completion from the hospital, though. And rightfully so. Jim needs some rest.

I've never questioned his desire, and I don't know how anybody ever could have. All the beat writers, and most other media members, have reported forever on just how hard he works.

The problem has always been the effectiveness of that hard work. Like his team and players, Jim's quite inefficient. Maximum effort, maximum dollars, minimal results.

Marquis' ERA+ by season:

2001 - 127

2002 - 82

2003 - 75

2004 - 114

2005 - 103

2006 - 73

Wow. 02, 03, and 06 were real awful.

He's either pretty good, or awful. Real hot/cold kind of guy, only it's over entire seasons.

I think it's more of Jim's desire to keep his job. He's doing everything humanly possible to hang on to his GM job right now. Still, gotta admire his fight.

Big Jim just needs to pull off a trade for Jennings/Westbrook or someone else good and I think well be set at pitching...

Zambrano

Jennings/Westbrook

Lilly

Hill

Prior/Miller

good enough for me

Funny how people's perceptions of a player change year by year. I guarantee you after last offseason, most people would have preferred Marquis over Suppan, and just about everyone would have liked Marquis more than Jennings.

A word of caution about judging a guy on one year....

That says to me that he's had 3 horrible seasons mixed in with 3 average seasons the past 6 years. We're not judging him on one year. We're judging him on the past 6 years of mediocrity or much worse.

Marquis hasn't had one bad year though. At his best, he's been good, at his worst, he's been terrible, overall, he has been bad.

Overall, his career ERA+ is 94 and his WHIP is 1.42. That's a little below average, but not bad. Bad is worse than that - i.e., Marshall, Marmol, Rusch, Prior or Guzman last year.

And the point about Beltre was that he was judged to be a great player on the basis of one year, that just happened to be the right year (before free agency). People are all over the Jennings bandwagon, but he was basically Gil Meche before a great 2006.

So 82 is horrible and 127 is average. That makes a lot of sense there, guy.

Ofman just said there are rumors flowing that Hendry's next target could be Suppan. I know everyone here thinks G.O. is an idiot, but it still warrants attention. He's not the guy getting the info anyways, its usually the beat reporters supplying the information.

I've read that Offman (or someone who came on right after) also said the Cubs were pursuing Baldelli and might have made an offer already. Did you here this?

From MLBTR.com

Cubs Minor Dealings

Today the Cubs selected busted prospect Josh Hamilton in the Rule 5 draft and shipped him to the Reds for cash.

A deal with Daryle Ward to bolster the bench is close.

The Cubs are still talking to Cliff Floyd's agent. Last night it was said that they had requested medical records.

Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio 1000 reports that a signing of pitcher Jason Marquis may be near.

I could have sworn I'd heard this report earlier, but my boss was talking on the phone while we were coming back from an appointment so I couldn't hear it that well.

No, as I mentioned in a recent post, I was in the car and had to turn the radio down so my boss could yap on the phone. What I heard was pretty intermittent.

Floyd AND Daryle Ward?

Hardly seems like there's going to be room for both. Even with Jones likely being traded, they still need a CF and someone that can back up CF. I suppose Theriot could back him up and back up middle infield as well, but Floyd and Ward to me is a bit redundant.

While I would prefer the emphasis be on OBP, I'd love to have Baldelli. He's young enough to improve his plate discipline.

why wouldnt you want Baldelli? :?

The odds of him putting up numbers like he did last season are very small, and the cost of acquiring him would be very high.

I wouldnt cry if we got him, but Church would probably just as productive, has much better patience, is left-handed, and would come at a much, much lower price.
