This can't possibly be true...

Since he lost out on Gil Meche, he will pursue Plan B, which is Jason Marquis. Marquis pitched for the Cardinals last year going 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA and 96 K. Over the past three years with the Cardinals, Marquis has gone 42-37 with a 4.62 ERA in 602.2 innings. The intial offer to Marquis was reportedly a three year deal worth 28-30 million dollars.

If that's true, I'm pretty much going to die from alcohol poisoning tonight.

Plan A- obviously wanted to play on West Coast

I'm already annoyed with this statement and it's only been two days.

Rumors are flying down here (STL...I can see Busch out my window and my firm has some connection to the Cards) that the Cubs just signed Marquis to a 3 year 27 million deal. Tell me that can't possibly be true...they mean a one year deal between 2.7 and 3 million...right?

that can't possibly be true. If so I'm not rooting for the Cubs this year.

I said earlier that I have no problem with Marquis joining the Cubs, but I sure as hell don't want them committing three years and several million per year to sign him. There's no justification for that kind of contract for him.

I don't see why it can't possibly be true. The Cubs are throwing money around to undeserving players, and they've done it for a very long time. I hope it's not true, and I assume, for now, that it's not. But it certainly could be.

The Cubs overpay people coming off good years, not guys coming off years in which they had an ERA over 6. Not to mention that there is no report with any legitimacy that has figures even close to this.

Probably because it was thrown around a lot last year too re: Giles (albeit with apparent justification).

The guy made a little over $5 million in 2006 and had an awful year. If he's truly fixed a flaw in his mechanics, that's great, and he might be worth taking a chance on. But taking a chance on a guy is a not a three-year deal for $4 million more per year than he made in 2006. Taking a chance is a one-year deal, maybe with an option. In this market, maybe that one-year deal is for $5-6 million, but it certainly isn't $9 million.

I've got a feeling it's going to be 3/28, something close to 9 million per.

This market is indeed quite insane.

That's pretty much my feeling as well. If that happens, I'll need to take a break for a while (to avoid being banned).

finally, a reason to hope marquis is a cub

lol

Signing Marquis to 3/27 would be so ... Cubs. I actually would be surprised if this doesn't happen.

yeah, if the Cubs sign Marquis for 3 or more years at more than $8M per year, mods please ban me for a month so that I can't get myself banned.

I really hope we don't sign this guy. I don't think he is as bad as some do, but we need a no. 2, not a no. 5.

Where are you going to get a number 2? I'm not in favor of signing Marquis, but a front-line starter is pretty much out of the question.
