We could fill it with Jennings too.

Per Rotoworld.

Jason Jennings turned down the Rockies' improved three-year, $24 million contract offer, making it more likely that he'll be traded.

Jennings could go to the Astros, with the Rockies looking at Willy Taveras, Dan Wheeler or Jason Hirsh. The Blue Jays and Mets are also believed to have interest, with the Jays perhaps offering Reed Johnson. Teams previously mentioned in connection with Jennings include the Twins, Rangers and Cubs.

Actually, I don't think that's a very optimistic blurb.

We are:

"previously mentioned" and

"in connection"

Oh I know, I'm just saying it appears that Jennings is still an option, after it sounded like he was off the trading block.

Would you be willing to give up Rich Hill and Felix Pie for Jason Jennings? Or would you rather go out and sign a similiar pitcher in Marquis without giving up Hill and Pie?

Neither. Suppan or Penny FTW.

Jones + Eyre for Lieber and prospects (at least one B). I think Lieber could be very servicable for the Cubs for one year.

The Rockies would trade Jennings for Rich Hill, straight up.

Why would the Cubs do that??? It makes no sense to trade a SP when your team is desperate for them.

weren't you implying that the Cubs would have to trade Hill and Pie to get Jennings?

I don't want Penny. Seeing him pitch to me he didn't seem anything special and I was shocked to see him do so well in the first half of the season.

His numbers post all-star:

80IP 12HR 26BB 66K 6.25 ERA 1.60WHIP .317BAA.

Those are terrible numbers. He did lose velocity last year after he was injured back in 2005(biceps injury) I would pass.

Yeah, which means it wont happen. Thats what the Rockies GM said he wanted in return for Jennings.

Well then he's an idiot. Hill for Jennings would be a steal for the Rockies, let alone getting the Cubs' best prospect.

This team is not going to win the WS barring some sort of miracle. Guys like Jennings, Westbrook, and Marquis are not going to change the odds enough to justify their costs.

If you can't acquire a real impact pitcher like Peavy, it makes no sense to block the kids.

I'd rather see what we can get from guys like Guzman and Marmol so we know what our needs will be in 08.

Isn't Weaver supposed to be a more talented, less productive pitcher, similar to Meche? If that's so, what are the chances we can get him on a 10 mil/yr, 3yr contract and get him to Clement for us? Or is he just a lazy bum who won't put it together?

Also, I'm liking Suppan or Penny here. Or Pie/Gallagher for Willis.

How about revisiting an old dream target: Daisuke Matsuzaka.

ESPN News just reported the Red Sox are very concerned they won't get a deal done with Matsuzaka. What if we traded for his rights. It would be hard to work out a deal that the Red Sox would be willing to walk away from a $51.1 Million refund check for, but not impossible.

If indeed a deal doesn't get done it should be the end of the posting process IMO.

Can we trade for his rights?

After reading the Chicago beat writers' articles today and seeing Piniella's comments to the effect that FA was more likely than a trade, it seems like the Cubs are determined to get the last pitcher for the rotation from FA. This convinces me that Marquis is probably the guy. Here's hoping he doesn't get more than 2 years.

Perhaps the thought is that young talent is harder to come by than money.

Not sure if this guy has been brought up but David Wells is considering making a comeback. I think I could live with Wells on a 1-year contract.

If he makes a comeback, the probability that he pitches for anyone outside of SoCal is probably less than 1%.

That's a good point. He'd probably end up with the Giants as rotoworld was speculating that he might be too expensive for the Padres.

Still, if he was an option is he worth pursuing?

I would say no. It was one thing when he was a loud mouth fatty fat fat who got the job done. Recently he's been either mediocre or absent. I'd steer clear.

Did Batista get signed already? He seems like a better target than Marquis.

Maybe I'm nuts, but I wouldn't mind Marquis. If he can be signed reasonably.

Marquis was god-awful last year, there is no getting around that. He is not worth 9 million a year.

Having said that, I think if he could put up something similar to his 2004 and 2005 numbers, he would be a decent addition to the back end of the rotation.

2004

15-7 201.1 IP 3.71 ERA

2005

13-14 207.0 IP 4.13 ERA

He falls in line with what the Cubs are looking for, durability. He has thrown at least 190 innings the last three years.

If, and only if, he can be signed to a reasonable contract, I don't think it is THAT bad of a move. I'd rather have him, with a decent contract, then 5/55 for Meche.

What worries me is the cardinals save careers, always get the best of of broken down pitchers. The fact that he's leaving them makes me weary the cubs staff can do it. I don't know the roster moves by the cardinals, maybe they don't want him to leave. Still makes me nervous.
