Good move, I'd rather have gotten Floyd though. I guess this is where giving 10 mil to Ted Lilly hurts the cubs with other acquisitions. If we get Floyd now, I'd be very very worried about the future of our regular OFs

So what's our bench look like now?

Blanco

Ward

Pagan?

Unknown Righty Power Hitter

Ward

Blanco

Theriot

Pagan.

We can't have ANY injuries.

We'd be okay if Izturis got hurt...

D'oh, how'd I forget about Theriot?

Edit: I'd like to bring Nevin back still, even though Ward is basically doing what he's doing.

I don't wish upon injuries to players but...

I don't think the acquisition of Daryle Ward in any way affects the pursuit of Cliff Floyd.

Why is that? Unless you think we are signing Floyd to start.

This can't work. I'm used to having pinch-hitters that are not any better of hitters than the pitchers they're hitting for. The idea of subbing out a pitcher for a decent hitter is just laughable.

Seriously though, good signing.

Between filling in at 1B, both corner OF spots, DH in intraleague and the first bat off the bench I think he'll get plenty of at bats.

I believe the interest in Floyd is to be a part-time starter.

Ward is just an extra bat on the bench.

Hopefully that's all he is. But all Hendry said was he wanted a LH bat, and if they wanted to, he could be the guy who takes 200 PA away from Murton. If he's not getting much OF time, he's not going to play much elsewhere.

absolutely, a pinchhitter, spells guys at 3 positions and DH. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Ward's 2006 splits:

vs. LHP .059/.158/.059 (17 AB)

vs. RHP .345/.412/.619 (113 AB)

last 3 seasons:

vs. LHP .264/.327/.273

vs. RHP .325/.406/.384

Ward may have had a career year last season, but he's still solid against RHP. Coming off the bench and facing righties, he's a huge improvement over the crap we had last season. At least he can take a walk.
