I think Hendry needs to make Schmidt his top priority and do whatever needs to get the deal done before accepting deals with Lilly or Meche. Now while that's the obvious opinion of most here, this is why I believe it needs to happen.

The Toronto front office stated (on MLB.com) that they would like to sign both Lilly and Meche, and anticipate getting at least one. Now what happens if the Jays DO sign both, and Schmidt is still on the market? Then the Hendricks would be able to ask for the moon from Hendry, because he would have lost out on two other options.

Re: The Jennings trade

For one thing, it was never proposed. For another, the Cubs value Marmol almost as much as Rich Hill, making him essentially untouchable.

Do you value Mr. BB himself Carlos Marmol anywhere near Hill? Hill is ready to go NOW. Marmol has great stuff but is still a year or two away IMO. Strangely enough I put Mateo over Marmol RIGHT NOW.

Ugh, where'd you get the quote from?

Can Marmol play shortstop? He has a higher career OPS than Izturis.

He used to be an outfielder, if memory serves me correctly.

Wasnt he a catcher?

Both.

Hill > Veal > Gallagher > Pawelek > Guzman > Marshall > Marmol > Ryu > Mateo

You rate Gooz too low, imo.

And no way would I rate Mateo ahead of Marmol. Being better than another player over the first 50 innings doesn't mean that player will be better the rest of his career.

I'd love Floyd if the deal is actually heavy on the incentives.

I wouldn't mind Floyd if it weren't for the sinking suspicion I have that his signing would take away four hundred of Murton's PAs.

I hope this reporter is on crack

They also held a discussion with the agent for right-hander Jeff Suppan, who might be the most bankable commodity among the thin ranks of available starters. And they met with the agent for left-hander Ted Lilly, who has expressed a desire to play in the Bay Area but isn't expected to turn down the Cubs if they offer five years and $55 million. Right-hander Gil Meche is another name on their list. [/b]

Even if they are able to back-load a deal, any of those upper-level starters would exhaust at least half of the $20 million or so the Giants have left to spend under their anticipated $85 million payroll.

we keep hearing it, but just never see any evidence of it. I know he's coming back from injury, but that has to be considered in projecting him. I know he was jerked around last year, but he still got 25 starts and was horrendous in the bigs and mediocre at AAA.

Same here.

5 yrs $55 million for TED FRIGGIN' LILLY? The Cubs better 'roid up on Lilly and get him to pitch like Carpenter, if they signed him to that deal. I can barely see signing him to a 3 yr $33 mill, but 2 more yrs, and 22 mill, HECKS no.

Indeed, and that's considered when I said he rates Gooz too low. His ceiling is higher than any rookie or minor leaguer from last year, he was returning from 2.5 seasons on the shelf and showed glimpses of what gives him such a high ceiling during his struggles last season.

And the Contra Costa Times better be wrong, because 5 years/$55 million for Ted Lilly is hideous, no matter what the market looks like. You should be able to get Jason Schmidt for around as many dollars for one few year.

Either that or Schmidt's contract demands just broached the Carlos Lee level.

ugh. they should have just used that money ear-marked for Lilly and Meche and used it to get Drew. then trade for some SP.

LOL, 5/55 for Lilly.

$11mil/yr for basically what amounts to 12-12, assuming the team hits decently for him.

You gotta wonder what's going to happen when the ever-fidgety Trib decides spending $160million was the wrong thing to do, and now they've got 5 or 6 long-term bloated contracts on the books.

You gotta wonder why the Trib Co waited for the worst FA crop in awhile mixed with an escalating spending market (aided partially by the team) to decide to become big spenders finally. Edited by UMFan83

I know I have said this several times, but think about who the common element in this org was over the last 12 years...

More news on Meche and Lilly

Sun-Times

Daily Herald

sounds like Schmidt is off the table. :(

Nothing in either of those articles gives any indication at all that Schmidt is off the table.

Of course it doesn't....but seriously, if we are close to landing BOTH Meche and Lilly, we ain't goin' after Schmidt....I can guarantee that.

Both articles offer nothing new than what was available yesterday. Both Meche and Lilly are speculation and heresay. Why don't we wait until something is announced before hitting the panic button?

Why do people always tell others how to feel with regards to the direction the Cubs are going? The Cubs, and Hendry specifically, have repeatedly shown poor decision making ability and priorities in personel matters, especially during the offseason. The time to panic was years ago. It's time for Hendry to do a 180 and make some smart decisions. Before that happens people have the right to feel however they want about what he is going to do.
