From SI.com:

Borris said one option would not be retirement.

"No, Borris said. "He loves playing the game too much."

Link.

Rotoworld estimates his salary at 10-12 million.

Go get him, Jimbo!

Do that without even thinking.

Rumor has it that Bonds is drawing little interest even from the Giants. I still believe he could be had for a 10 million dollar deal.

With Bonds in the line-up, we could trade Jones and sign Lofton for CF.

Imagine this line-up:

RF Soriano

CF Lofton

1b Lee

LF Bonds

3b Ramirez

C Barrett

2b DeRosa

SS Izturis

Amazing!

Bonds would only be a one year, so Murton could be the fourth OF for one year and then take over in left again in 2008.

If he could be had for anything less than $12M, he'd be absolutely worth it. He's an injury risk, especially in the NL, but with Murton as a backup fourth OF even 100 games of Bonds would be worth it.

I would rather have Murton in the line-up then Izzy or DeRosa. I prefer Soriano at 2B, and Murton in LF/RF. Izzy or DeRosa at SS.. whoever is having a better season.

we probably need to spend that 10-12 mil on pitching.

Trade Izturis and Eyre to wherever and use that cash instead. Plus they still have more. Getting Bonds' production for that cheap is so insanely awesome.

Soriano,Bonds,DLee,and Rameriz 4 guys in the lineup who could hit 30+ Wed have the best offense in the NL

i agree... i would love this... but DEFENSE???

Not much worse than Murton in LF. Bonds was once a Gold Glove OF, something Murton will never be. I'd trade Murton for a pitcher.

I don't think the pitcher you'd get would be equal to the value Murton provides.

Bonds also is going to miss 60-70 games, so it would be nice to have Murton to play in those games.

Yeah, you gotta keep Murton. Playing so many day games, Bonds is going to need some of those off.

I like the idea. You could even platoon him with Murton giving him the time off that his body needs. I would love to see him break a window across the street again, only this time in a Cub uniform

after the way Z and Prior have thrown at Bonds and shown him up, what makes you think he would want to come here?

because he would be coming to a team with two pitchers with good enough stuff to show up Barry Bonds.

and which pitcher would you like to spend it on? a half season of barry bonds is worth much, much more than 30 gil meche starts, that's for sure.

Because it seems like no one else wants him

you know, MacPhail is no longer around, but there very well may be an element of Trib management that really likes bringing guys in to set milestones. I wonder if the extra marketing money would make him too tempting for the Trib to resist.

By some metrics, Bonds was a better than average fielder last year. He was certainly better than Carlos Lee, and no one in Houston is upset about Lee's defense (yet).

I dont see Lee struggling to play defense that much with that short fence in LF.

there's alot more variables. I can see him getting sucked into the fence only to have the ball bounce away from him right now. trying to negotiate the well in center will be an adventure. the corner is shallow but runs straight out to standard depth in left center, so there is still some ground to cover, and the angel of the fence and the scoreboard, overhangs, etc. will create some bounces he won't be able to handle.

Until balls start hitting the fence in that short porch.

Actually they could all hit 40+, except Bonds likely wouldn't have enough ABs to do so.

But, the real point is that the Cubs would have 4 guys who could easily hang a 130+ OPS, and, if they platooned Jones/Murton and a solid year out of Barrett two more positions well over 100. Not to mention the very real possibility that someone like DeRosa in the #2 slot would probably benefit from enough meatbll pitches to also stay well over 100. All of which has traditionally led to Top 3 (if not #1) offenses.

It might still be cleaner to do the Murton/Bonds platoon and Pie in CF, or just go with Drew, but Bonds added to the existing team would be very scary.

The Cubs clubhouse isn't big enough for him. The other players wouldn't be able to stay away from him before games.

Well, I'll take Bonds in LF over someone who played 3 months with 200 AB's and 13 rbi's. Pagan can spell Bonds. Edited by oldcubsfan

I know Vance has been calling for the Cubs to acquire Bonds, and it just seems so wrong. You have to ask yourself if he would be healthy and worth the investment.

I think he would be. Yes, I detest his personality and morality - but the dude is crippled and still is mad productive.

I would be really pumped if we got Bonds for a couple years. I just have a feeling that he will either remain in SF or go to the AL and DH. Having Bonds in LF for 100-120 games would really do beautiful things for this offense.

As far as his clubhouse presence goes, I only know one person who was his teammate in the past, and that guy says that Bonds was one of the best teammates he ever had. According to him, Bonds is not anything like what the media makes him out to be.

Who really cares if someone is liked by the press? I don't. I think most of the press are lazy failures who are jealous of the players.

I don't know if having Bonds would make it worse for the Cubs or better. If the game was played on a computer it would be a no brainer but the circus that follows him may be a huge distraction to the team.

I bet it's not Jeff Kent.

For the record, I remember Bruce reporting in one of the threads that the Cubs had no interest in signing Bonds

Thank God.

Unless you've had a chance to see the destructive influence the Bonds circus has had on the Giants organization, you can't realize how bad an idea this is. He's a cancer, and one on his last legs at that. Steer well clear.
