I'll believe Schmidt when I see it. That one's too much of a roller coaster to jump on right now.

I'll believe both when I see them. I think there's a decent chance we don't end up with either of them.

It looks like Lilly will sign with the Cubs. ESPN1000 reported the Cubs could sign both Lilly and Schmidt.

Z/Schmidt/Hill/Lilly/Miller-Prior

That's a rotation I could be happy with. Now go get a SS and a CF Hendry.

I don't like the idea of pitching your left-handed starters back to back. Specially considering Lilly and Hill have a similar style of pitching.

Zambrano

Schmidt

Lilly

Miller/Prior

Hill

That is how I would set the rotation.

That's a good point, I didn't even think of that. To be honest, I think I'd prefer Hill #3 and Lilly #5 though, but we all know that won't happen.

Order doesn't matter. When you talk about a team's 1-5, it doesn't necessarily mean what order they make their starts. If you want to stagger your lefties that's one thing. But you don't have to worry about whether Hill is 3 and Lilly is 4 or 5 or whatever. Over the course of 162 games, rotations will not stay constant, orderwise. But the quality of your pitchers is where you want to worry about 1,2,3,4 and 5.

I'd be fine adjusting to that rotation after a while, but not to start off the season. In April and May when we get to skip the 5th starter on occassion I'd rather give Miller or Prior the time off than keep Hill off the mound.

Agreed.

Is there some new news they reported on either pitcher? Or is just the same Lilly stuff we've been hearing for a few days?

Bruce Levine reports the Cubs are making a run at Jason Schmidt.

Where does he report this?

It was on the 3:20 update

I am still waiting on the 3:30 and 3:40 updates, almost time for the 3:50 update.

man, i am trying so hard not to get excited- i will be heartbroken if we dont get him-

I know everyone's eager about Schmidt, but I figure he's not going to be signed for a few days at least. I really want this Lilly situation to reach it's conclusion today.

Interesting note about Lilly:

According to Nate Silver, PECOTA projects Lilly to have a 4.90 ERA if he plays for Toronto, but adjusting for park factors, league difficulty, etc., he'd project to have a 4.36 ERA pitching for the Cubs.

Yeap. This is all very typical of the first couple days of winter meetings.

To be fair to the media though, they are basically down there to uncover and report any bit of info they can. It's really a "listener beware" situation-----there's an expectation that everything needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

How many innings are they projecting for Lilly? He seems like a guy who will never reach the 200+IP to me.

That's what happens when you have just under 30% of your starts over the last three years come against the Yankees and the Red Sox.

4/40 for a 4.36 ERA in 1st year of the deal? Awesome, what a bargain!

Yeah, his ERA was predicted to drop down to 4.65 if he was just playing for the Yankees... as he wouldn't have to face their lineup.

I'm not sure if that's premium content or not...

feel free to share your ideas for what the cubs should do.

So to clarify, there's definitely no word on rather Lilly (or Schmidt for that matter) has actually been signed or agreed to anything?

Not a peep.

This is a disturbingly silent year for the Winter Meetings...
