LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (CP) - The Chicago Cubs moved to the forefront of the Ted Lilly sweepstakes Tuesday, according to the agent for the former Toronto Blue Jays left-hander.

The Blue Jays had tabled what Larry O'Brien had termed a "competitive" offer late Monday night, but his meetings with the Cubs on Tuesday afternoon changed the equation.

"Our talks with the Cubs are becoming more advanced," he told a throng of reporters. "They've indictated that they're willing to pay what needs to be paid."

Meh.

Second prize is Lilly. First prize is not overpaying for a mediocre pitcher.

It looks like Lilly will sign with the Cubs. ESPN1000 reported the Cubs could sign both Lilly and Schmidt.

Is there some new news they reported on either pitcher? Or is just the same Lilly stuff we've been hearing for a few days?

That quote from Lilly's agent makes me think that he is using us to drive up the price. Alternatively he could be signaling to other interested clubs that the auction is coming to an end, so they'd better get their final bids in qucikly.

That would make me a very happy Cub fan.

Wow. Lilly, Schmidt, and Soriano, and likely some horribly overpriced replacement for Jones. Hendry obviously doesn't give a damn how much cash he ties up in contracts that will probably be millstones in 2 or 3 years.

So Lilly is still not any further along than yesterday, then?

ESPN1000 reported the Cubs made a 4/40 offer to Lilly. I don't see how Lilly would turn that offer down. Though, Toronto really wants Lilly back in their rotation.

Z/Schmidt/Hill/Lilly/Miller-Prior

That's a rotation I could be happy with. Now go get a SS and a CF Hendry.

How hilarious (not in a good way) is it, that even after the two biggest FA signings come to Chicago, signing the top FA pitcher, and a middle of the rotation guy gets us halfway to our goal.

Well, if Jones didn't want out so badly, I think we'd be a lot closer. As in only a decent SS away from contending for the pennant. I (for some weird reason) have faith in Hendry to fill the remaining holes. I'm cautiously excited about this team.

It goes to show you just how bad we were last year and how bad off we were this offseason. At least he's not content on filling half the positions and rolling the dice on the other

I don't like the idea of pitching your left-handed starters back to back. Specially considering Lilly and Hill have a similar style of pitching.

Zambrano

Schmidt

Lilly

Miller/Prior

Hill

That is how I would set the rotation.

Toronto has apparently made the same offer.

I'd be fine adjusting to that rotation after a while, but not to start off the season. In April and May when we get to skip the 5th starter on occassion I'd rather give Miller or Prior the time off than keep Hill off the mound.

That's a good point, I didn't even think of that. To be honest, I think I'd prefer Hill #3 and Lilly #5 though, but we all know that won't happen.

Considering the fact that Hill is more likely to stay healthy over Miller/Prior...Hill goes 4th, with whoever is healthy at the time between Gooz/Prior/Miller will go fifth.
