I would say the swing is his highlight, but you could also choose to remember him for his 2-run single in game 3 of the LDS against Maddux when Prior only gave up 1 over 9. He also hit that pinch hit 2-run homer against the Marlins in game 3 of the LCS that year.

He was a clutch player because he actually put the ball in play against a pitcher like Greg Maddux. He has his place, but only on a strong ball-club that can hide him on the bench. That is pretty rare, though.

I'd love Simon off of the bench. How many times did we fail to drive someone in when we had someone on 3rd with less than 2 outs? Simon swung at everything, but he made a ton of contact and didn't hit into too many double plays. He'd be the perfect pinch hitter for those late and close games with men in scoring position and less than two outs.

This is old news everybody. See the date? September 1st. Simon played off the bench for the Phillies all of September, but I have no idea if they plan to keep him next year.

There are many better uses of a roster spot than Randall Simon.

There are worse ones as well.

If you're lucky enough to have the top 5 non-starters in all of baseball, yeah. Simon would be a solid bench option. Are there better? Yeah. Will we find 5 better guys to fill our bench with? Highly unlikely.

*COUGH* Neifi Perez *COUGH*

The problem with Simon is he's all or nothing with that approach. So, when he's hot, he's a nice bench option. But when he's bad, he's worse than Neifi. He had a 41 OPS+ last year. Granted, it was one month of play, but his last season of significant time was 2004, when he had a 41 as well.

A line of .188/.266/.266 is absolutely awful. He's a guy who got by on talent in his 20's, putting up respectable lines, for a bench player. But he's in his 30's now and hasn't been remotely decent since 2003. Yes, he did some nice things for the Cubs, but lots of guys can claim to have had nice stints on the Cubs who were never to be heard from again.

A .283/.320/.422 career line isn't exactly what I want out of a bench player that can only play first base. I could accept that from a guy that can adequately play a few different positions, but not a guy that can just play 1B. Just about any team should be able to do better than that. A team with the financial resources of the Cubs should definitely be able to top that.

If you're looking at career numbers, a lefty with a .283 career average with some pop is a great option to have off the bench, regardless of what positions he can play.
