gammons said something like "remember, steroids weren't illegal at the start of mcgwire's career" or something like that. I didn't realize the MLB's rules take precedent over actual laws.

"My daughter asked me how I want to be remembered. I said to be remembered at all is pretty cool" -Ripken

I don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread, but it really pisses me off that ESPN talks about McGwire in the first couple paragraphs of their headline story before talking about Ripken and Gwynn.

Dawson over Blyleven? Concepcion over Trammel? SOMEONE VOTED FOR JAY BUHNER? This whole process is a [expletive] joke.

Buhner at least had a career OPS of .853 and 310 homers. While he certainly isn't a Hall of Famer, the fact that he got a vote is not nearly as bad as when Jim Deshaies and his career ERA+ of 91 got a vote his first year on the ballot. Of course, Deshaies jokingly campaigned for the vote, but still.

Ripken gets the highest percentage vote of any position player

Id love to hear who the 8 people who didnt vote for him were and why, but we are never likely to get that info.

I bet their reasons would involve me using an

LMFAO, that is HILARIOUS. Keep in mind you did say "Gammons".

I wish the Hawk would get in.

BTW, Vets' Committee ballots are out in February, and I'm sure Santo will be unjustifiably passed over again.

Peter isn't that bad

Not always, but not surprising this comment would come from him? You surprised??

Not really. I agree with the comment that MLB policy doesn't take precedent over any laws (at least, it shouldn't). Yes it's wrong IMHO and yes it's unethical IMHO. However, it is fair to point out whether or not something was against MLB rules. If a player was between the parameters of the rules at that time, we should be questioning MLB policy and MLB officials at that time for said parameters. Just my :twocents:

I see your point, but anything against the law should be considered by athletes (and everyone for that matter) way before ever trying to figure out a way to doop ones employer so they can get ahead at work. Essentially that is what is being said. MLB was McGuires employer, instead of looking at the bigger picture, "hey steriods are illegal, I could be arrested if I was caught with these" he thought about how "technically" there was no written MLB law saying that players could not use enhancement drugs, so hey lets get big and strong so I can hit some more homeruns and be a bumbling idiot in a few years when I am questioned by the grand jury for steriod use.

SORRY OFF MY SOAP BOX NOW.

I believe it was against MLB policy though. I think MLB prohibited the use of any illegal substances including steroids. They just didn't test for it.

Albert Belle deserves more love.

He had very good numbers, but apparently needed to show a little more love.

What do you mean? Just because he chased a heckling fan in the stands, destroyed a bathroom, hit a fan and a photographer with balls thrown into the stands, charged the mound numerous times, verbally destroyed NBC reporter Hannah Storm, chased egg-throwing teenagers in his car on Halloween, basically murdered Fernando Vina, and stalked his ex-girlfriend doesn't mean anything. :-D
