is schilling a hall of famer?

I think he will get in due to the hero status leveled on him by the writers already, especially the east coasters. He will benefit from a lot of subjectiveness, instead of straight up numbers. He was instrumental in two teams winning somewhat improbable World Series titles. He showed up in multiple Cy Young and MVP races. He was a dominant postseason pitcher in 4 seperate trips to the playoffs. He's pretty high on the career K list, and fairly high on the career ERA+ list. He's in trouble with the career wins, and doesn't have the seasons of absolute brilliance that Pedro, or even Koufax has to make up for the low total.

If Boston somehow wins the WS this year, and he's a big part, I say there's no doubt he makes it. If not, I say he probably eventually makes it.

yeah, i think he makes it too. his low win total (low 200's?) hurts him quite a bit, but a bunch of other stuff helps him. like you said, he starred in two of the most remembered world series of the past ten years. and he's also always been very media-friendly and charitable, which i think will help him too.

jim baker of BP pointed out in his article today that mcgwire is 8th all-time in terms of EqA.

.366: Babe Ruth

.364: Ted Williams

.356: Barry Bonds

.345: Lou Gehrig

.343: Albert Pujols

.342: Frank Thomas

.341: Mickey Mantle

.335: Rogers Hornsby

.335: Mark McGwire

that's pretty good company.

Tony Gwynn's Stats

His credentials are impressive, but I wonder how he would fare putting up those kinds of numbers today. He'll definitely make the HOF based on his gold gloves, all star games, postseason numbers, and BA...but still, I have to wonder.

Long time no see Outshined! :D

Honestly, 19 out of 20 seasons where his batting average was over .300, and that's pretty darned impressive. Let's take Ty Cobb for example here, he hit over .300 for 24 consecutive seasons. Even in the era of weak pitching we have today, no one will ever do that again.

It's not like he had some inflated OBP built from intentional walks, people pitching around him, lineup protection, or places where the foul pole is 300 feet away. He worked in an era when baseball was played in cavernous places and where a high home run total was 10.

I think Gywnn should be able to get in on the first try.

I don't see why there is any doubt at all about Gwynn.

As I stated before: 3,000 hits = HOF, no matter what era you play in.

You mean Scott Brosius didn't get in??

Inconcievable.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

And also:

If McGwire is left off the first ballot, Bonds damn well better be, too.

Oh, the Guardians of Baseball will be up in arms by the time Bonds is eligible. The hyperbole will fly like a yak in heat.

Gossage is in next year going against first-ballot baseball titans like Shawon Dunston, David Justice, Travis Fryman, Tim Raines (actually not that bad), and Randy Velarde.

People forget that while the voting is completely flawed, they take into consideration fielding and baserunning. Bonds, like it or not, was an amazing fielder and baserunner. McGwire was neither. If I was a voter, I would just stop Bonds numbers after 98. Even then he was still a HOF.
