Dave Parker was a heck of a player for 3 or 4 years and I'm not sure there were many better players at the time. It's too bad he couldn't sustain it.

I hope Blyleven gets in.

Tony Gwynn's Stats

His credentials are impressive, but I wonder how he would fare putting up those kinds of numbers today. He'll definitely make the HOF based on his gold gloves, all star games, postseason numbers, and BA...but still, I have to wonder.

3141 hits = HOF in any era.

.388 career OBP

.338 career BA

Is there really any reason he shouldn't get in?

If Wade Boggs can make it Gwynn definately should make it.

let's not forget his EIGHT batting titles, either.

That too.

Tony Gwynn is about as much of a guarantee to get into the HOF as there ever was. There's no reason he shouldn't be unanimously selected on the HOF ballot.

According to the article, the ballot consists of the following players:

Harold Baines

Albert Belle

Dante Bichette

Bert Blyleven

Bobby Bonilla

Scott Brosius

Jay Buhner

Ken Caminiti

Jose Canseco

Dave Concepcion

Eric Davis

Andre Dawson

Tony Fernandez

Steve Garvey

Rich "Goose" Gossage

Tony Gwynn

Orel Hershiser

Tommy John

Wally Joyner

Don Mattingly

Mark McGwire

Jack Morris

Dale Murphy

Paul O'Neill

Dave Parker

Jim Rice

Cal Ripken Jr.

Bret Saberhagen

Lee Smith

Alan Trammell

Devon White

Bobby Witt

In my opinion, Gwynn, Ripken, Gossage and McGwire should all get in. Strong cases could be made for Blyleven, Trammell, Smith, Belle, and possibly even Rice, as well.

I'm predicting McGwire will miss the cut.

Unfortunately, you're probably right about that. Some sportswriters will feel they are making a statement by not voting for him the first time around. Then we'll get a week's worth of articles by those writers, trying to justify to the public why they didn't vote for him.

Strong class. Gwynn and Ripken will get in on the first ballot. McGwire might have to wait a few years. Blyleven, Smith, and Gossage might get in if there's a weak class some other year, even though they are deserving. Trammell deserves it, but played under the radar for most of his career and might not make it. I'm not sure Belle will make it because of the being-a-jerk factor. Rice has had some chances, but I think he will continue to fall short unless there's a weaker class coming up. I would love to see Dawson get in, but I think he won't make it.

Hold-overs rarely make it when there is a strong first class. Last year, none of the first-timers were locks, and still only Sutter made it in.

My guess is that Ripken and Gwynn will be the only guys going in this year.

McGwire won't make the 75%. The other guys will fall short.

I agree that Ripken and Gwynn will probably be the only two to make it this year from the list.

However, if voters are going to be too stubborn to vote for McGwire, then they should at least put that vote to good use and give it to Gossage. He should have been voted in awhile ago.

Ripken and Gwynn.

Regardless of the fact that he's a juicer, I still wouldn't vote for Big Mac on account of his one dimensionality as a player. He couldn't run, he couldn't hit for average, he couldn't play D especially well. He could hit home runs, that's about it.

Who I would vote for bolded, who I think will get in italicsed.

He actually wasn't all that bad defensively before injuries started to limit his range a bit.

583 homers and a career .982 OPS is good enough for me.

I don't feel that either belong in the HOF, but I'm curious as to how you can vote for Jack Morris while not voting for Tommy John.

While Dawson and Murphy were very good players, I think they both fall a little short of being considered HOF-worthy.

C'mon man. You'll vote for Big Mac but not for Dawson?

Let's compare:

Dawson: .279 BA, 2,774 hits, 1373 runs, 438 homeruns, 503 2B, 1591 rbi, 314 sb, 1 mvp, 8 gold gloves

McGwire: .263 BA, 1626 hits, 1167 runs, 583 homeruns, 252 2B, 1414 rbi, 12 sb, no mvps, 1 gold glove
