The "screw records, conferences, and game resumes, vote for the best team" argument is pretty laughable.

As is the put an inferior team in the title game argument.

As is the "Michigan is the better team and deserves to play for the national championship even though there's no evidence of this" argument

that's incredibly lame. both as an argument in general and because there's plenty of evidence that Michigan is the second best team in the county and until the voters completely changed the way they vote, everybody agreed UM was better.

GO UCLA!!!!!

Amen. Also, go Florida. Judging by the newly released BCS rankings, Florida *may* be able to jump over Michigan with a win over Arkansas and of course a USC loss to UCLA.

Just wanted to point out that I was the first one to realize this

Inferior by what criteria? records? game resumes?

Florida's terrible play 6 of the last 7 games?

Posted (edited)

the problem with michigan is that their best argument to get in is a loss not a win. ND and Wisconsin are terribly overrated. The teams Wisconsin have beat have a combined ZERO wins against top 25 teams.

Florida has run through a gauntlet. I am not saying theyre better, but they've probably proven more on the field. Look at it this way, say UM makes it.

If UM beats OSU, and UF beats ND, then we really know nothing about who the top team is. It's a three team disaster. If OSU beats UM again, we'll say so we already knew they could beat UM, what about UF?

Really there's no good coming from UM in the NC in that respect. If UF goes and OSU wins, we can say hey OSU beat UF and UM so they are the easy top team. If UF wins, then there's a bit more clarity then there was if UM won.

Anyways the LA Times is reporting that UF is number 2 in the BCS

didnt michigan put up like 14 points against 3-9 BSU? They had a downstretch earlier.

Florida wouldn't even be in this position if South Carolina could kick a fricking extra point or a field goal. :x

I don't think it will be a good game but UF-OSU should be the title game even though I think Michigan is better than UF.

How far would you be willing to go with that logic? If Arkansas beat Florida yesterday then what? Does Louisville go to the title game then? West Virginia? Boise? Arkansas?

I was thinking under the assumption that only USC, UF, and UM had shots at the title game. USC went down so scratch them off. If UF went down also then UM would get the title berth.

Personally I think Boise and Louisville should get serious consideration but realistically I know they won't because of how they and their conferences are perceived in the media.

And Michigan wouldnt even be in this position if the refs in the Auburn game could make a call correctly.

Did you watch the game last night? They looked pretty awful until Fish for Arkansas decided to be a bonehead and muff the punt at his own 3-yard line.

Michigan lead BSU 31-12 late in the third and let them back into the game.

I posit that Tennessee is severely overrated, Penn State severely underrated. and not that Wisconsin played anybody, but I'm not exactly impressed with the resume of LSU or Auburn either. the resumes are pretty much equal, until you consider how UM won their games and how Florida won their games. Florida always scrambling, UM always rolling.

Id almost rather had USC won yesterday. I was perfectly content with a OSU/USC game. I just dont think Florida is all that good. They've won so many games by the skin of their teeth. I know one game isnt a true indictor but one common opponent was Vanderbilt, i know, lousy example but anyway... Vandy put up 414 yards of offense. 414. Vandy put up 144 against UM.

90% of my belief that Florida isnt very good is subjective opinions of watching them play this year. This is the system we live in right. Ive been saying all year that they are not that good. Its not just now.

And why is USC ranked #7 now. They were supposed to go to the title game and drop 5 spots because of a loss to UCLA?

Why is Penn State underrated? Because all four of their losses came to good teams? That doesn't change the fact that they didn't beat anybody. If anything, I would call Penn State overrated.

Yet they beat a top 10 team by 10 points. Funny how easy it is to write that off.

Hey, here are some close games against mediocre competition:

at Cincinnati (7-7) W 23-19

at Northwestern (3-9, 1-7 conference) W 27-16

at Wisconsin (8-6, 2-6 conference) W 19-14

Penn State (8-4, 5-3 conference) W 13-7

at Purdue (4-4, 7-6 conference) W 10-6

at Illinois (5-7, 4-4 conference) W 23-16

Michigan (10-3, 6-2 conference) W 14-9

A lot of close games against some not-so-great competition. Maybe this team shouldn't have been allowed to play for a championship either.

14th rated in total defense even though they faced four of the top 11 in the country is pretty damn difficult to accomplish.

Penn State is NOT severely underrated. Penn State beat Akron, Youngstown State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Purdue, Illinois, Temple and Michigan State. They're good enough to beat bad or average teams, but not good enough to beat good teams.

I'm not exactly impressed with the resume of LSU or Auburn either.

LSU beat two top 10 ranked teams on the road. Auburn beat two top 10 teams at home. Wisconsin didn't beat a team that won a game against a top 25 opponent.

I don't think they're exactly the same thing. you don't know how the Auburn-Florida game would have come out without the controversial call fo which you speak. the SC game, you know exactly how the game comes out if SC makes that field goal.

not if you have a great defense. Penn State has one of the 10 best defenses in the country. But they're 55th in offense and 72nd in turnover margin, and all of their good offensive performances came against bad teams.

The problem is the BCS.

It's just the BCS. There's always going to be that argument.

BCS promised to end the incessant arguments. It hasn't. It has failed. It needs to be removed in favor of a playoff.

I'm sick of shouting to a brick wall every year on this. So is everyone else. Let's kidnap the bowl presidents, vote in a playoff system, then release them.

The presidents need to be told to shut up. BCS needs to die. Playoff needs to be instituted. End of story.

Exactly. It all comes down to how terrible the BCS is as a system. There needs to be a playoff system implemented, or we're just going to keep having these arguments over and over again, with different teams each year. It's a terrible system that doesn't work.

typically a top 10 defense in the country is enough to get you ranked no matter how bad your offense is. that's a little difficult when you play four teams that are better than you overall and you don't pull any of them out. typically a team with a top ten D gets into the top 25.

Auburn's offense has proven to be only marginally better, their defense only marginally better. yet they find themselves sitting at what, #10? after getting smoked by a generall uninspiring Georgia team two weeks ago? c'mon man. the difference between those two teams are slight. certainly the difference is not one at #10 and one not rated whatsoever.

Auburn beat Florida and LSU. I can assure you that Penn State would not have a chance against either of those teams.
