'According to Kevin Kennedy on MLB Radio on XM Satellite Radio and Tim Kurkjian of ESPN Radio, the Cubs and outfielder Cliff Floyd are closing in on a one year contract worth up to a maximum of nine million dollars. What does this do for the outfield? Also, Floyd told Newsday that the Cubs were his first choice'

This would be pretty...really dumb. Really, really dumb.

I've heard that we were pursuing him to be a bench player, but 9m is obviously too much for that.

However, I don't see a thing about this anywhere else.

I think Floyd would be a great bench option and would make our bench very strong. But $9 million for a bench option? If this were to be true, my guess would be that he is going to get an opportunity to win a starting OF job and that it is an incentive-laden contract. Hopefully this turns out to be false.

I would have no problems with Floyd on the bench... just so long as he's the 4th outfielder... not a platoon-mate for Murton.

Exactly. As long as he's the 4th OF, I have no problem with Floyd on the team at all.

If this is true, I can only hope that they replacing Jones with Floyd and hoping to bring in Pie in 2008.

Otherwise, it's bye bye Matt Murton and that really sucks.

Good lord! What in the world has Floyd done recently to earn that sort of a raise? I think I'm going to try missing work 40% of the time next year and then demand a 26% raise. If my boss has a problem with that, I'll tell her to take it up with Cliff Floyd.

If Hendry picks up Floyd for more than $6M, you can bet his intention is to start - or at the very least platoon him.

Even 6M is more than you pay a part time player. Even in this silly market looking at contacts for guys like Blanco gives you an idea of what a backup makes.

Inside the Ivy is NOT a reliable source. At all.

Last year, ITI said the Cubs were signing Furcal and trading for Soriano. They all but guaranteed it. At least, they only missed Soriano by a year.

Couple of years, they also said the Cubs were signing Pudge.

Careful, the exact words were that the contract would be worth up to a maximum of 9 million. Who knows what the base is. If someone gets injured and winds up starting and puts up the numbers he is capable of, he would easily be worth 9 million given what Pierre and GMJr are making.

As far as confirmation, I can't help there besides providing another source and some background. Apparently, Cliff and Jim go way back...

Sun-Times"]New York Mets outfielder Cliff Floyd gave Cubs general manager Jim Hendry such a hug when he saw him Monday at Wrigley Field that Hendry's ribs still hurt Tuesday.

It wasn't a case of fraternizing with the enemy; it was a friendly greeting.

I signed him out of [Thornwood] High School to play for me at Creighton, but then he got chosen in the first round of the 1991 draft [Montreal Expos, 14th pick overall] and went right into pro ball," Hendry said. We've been close and stayed in touch ever since."

And this on Floyd's leanings this offseason...

Newsday.com"]His first choice is the Cubs, who would give him the chance to play in his hometown, and Floyd's preference is to remain in the National League because of his familiarity with the pitching staffs.

Ben Maller of Fox Sports posted the following on his Rumor Page, but I can't provide a link...

According to Fox Sports:

The Cubs are also in heated talks with New York Mets free agent Cliff Floyd, a longtime Hendry favorite who could platoon with Matt Murton in left. Right fielder Jacque Jones could move to center or left, or be traded.

I know alot of people don't like the idea of a platoon, but I definately see the benefit of having a Floyd/Murton LF. In fact...a Floyd/Murton LF would be very productive, not to mention the Cubs are guarantee to have a solid hitting option off the bench LATE IN THE GAME that improves the chances of winning the game.

So if the Cubs can sign Floyd a 1 yr say $4 mill deal (with incentives), I can't see that CAN'T help the Cubs.

Oh man, I remember that.

And let's not forget ITI's scouting report of Bobby Brownlie with his "outlaw" 95 mph curve. :)

I'm not opposed to Floyd. I wouldn't want a strict platoon, but he would be a decent bench player who would provide some pop from the left side.

I don't, however, want to pay Floyd 9 million. If he could be signed to a contract that has a base around 1-3 million with some incentives carrying it to 4-5, I would be fine with that.

I don't think anybody "wants" to pay Floyd that much money, but with Pierre and Matthews both signing for as much as they did, isn't Floyd "worth" (in quotation marks due to the crazy market this off season) 9 million if he stayed healthy all season and started 150 games? Remember, the base would be lower, only the rumored maximum after all incentives were reached would be 9 million.

I think Floyd would have to protect his value by only signing a contract that paid him at least that if he played in 150 games. Obviously, the base would be quite a bit lower than that considering that he is coming off of an injury maybe around 3 million. But I can't see, given his ability to produce, why incentives that went as high as 9 million would be unacceptable. Given his OPS when healthy and the FA market of late, I would think that number would be only fair.

Floyd would be a strong signing by Hendry. Not sure about dollar figures since this is still just a rumor.

I'd prefer him to come off the bench while Murt starts, just because I think Matty has a shot to break out this year. If they're signing him as a bench player/insurance policy against injury, then this sounds like a very good idea to me.

It's been since Glenallen Hill that we had solid power off the bench.

Signing Floyd does a couple of things-

1. gives us a formidable lefty bat off the bench

2. If a platoon is in place then we have Murton coming in to PH as well-

signing Floyd makes us stronger in 2 areas- power and bench- i would like the signing, even though Floyd is injury prone we would have Murton as insurance-

I can't confirm anything but this guy I used to be in a bunch of fantasy leagues with was a pretty close friend with Floyd and told me that he really wanted to come finish his career in Chicago. He said he was frustrated with all the injuries he was dealing with and was contemplating retirement.

The guy showed me tons of pictures he had with his wife and Cliff Floyd and I believe Floyd has made it obvious in the past that he wouldn't mind coming and playing for the Cubs.

9 mil for Floyd??? Yuck!

If Floyd "truly" wants to play for the Cubs, then it shouldn't take "$9 mill" to get a deal done, especially with his injry concerns.
