Rotoworld reporting it now too:

Cubs purchased the contracts of LHP Clay Rapada and RHP Rocky Cherry.

A couple of relief prospects. Rapada has the better chance of the two of establishing himself in the majors. He gets grounders and he finished with a 17/3 K/BB ratio in 14 2/3 innings in the Arizoan Fall League.

So, what's the analysis on this move, experts?

Is it a run-of-the-mill, fairly meaningless move, or are we gearing up for something bigger?

Say goodbye to one of our lefties. Rapada is a stereotypical loogy.

awesome!

27 year olds getting protected

Why does age matter in this case? The concern is protecting guys that could maybe be hidden on a MLB roster elsewhere and stick. Apparently, they think Cherry could help a bad team in the bullpen all year and stick.

because once he is 27 he is not likely to improve much. if he isn't major league ready, let him go. kind of depends who isn't getting rostered of course.

I'm counting 41 on the 40 man roster...

I was thinking that too...

I supoose they may have dropped a bum like Bynum and we just haven't heard about it.

Or even better: Rusch expected to announce retirement!

more likely rusch to the 60 day.

No 60 day DL during offseason.

in that case, they are probably counting soriano, who isn't signed yet.

has anyone actually seen cherry pitch? he could be another wuertz. since going from starting to relieving, he has been very effective. as far as rapada, i believe it was speculated previously that one or two of the lefties might be going to cleveland for westbrook. i still think it is likely to happen eventually but i just hope they take cedeno too.
