Bill Mueller-3B-Dodgers Nov. 17 - 8:11 pm et

Dodgers announced the retirement of third baseman Bill Mueller.

Mueller, forced to call it quits by a knee injury that wasn't going to get any better, will serve as a special assistant to Los Angeles GM Ned Colletti. This takes his $4.5 million salary off the Dodgers' books, but it seems likely that there's some sort of agreement entitling him to at least a significant portion of what he was due. The 35-year-old Mueller finishes his career with a .291/.373/.425 line, 85 homers and 493 RBI in 11 major league seasons. His best year was 2003, his first year with the Red Sox, when he won the AL batting title and established career highs with a .326 average, 19 homers and 85 RBI. In 2004, he came up with the big hit that drove in Dave Roberts in Game 4 of the ALCS and batted .429 in Boston's World Series victory.

who's this Billy Mueller of which you speak? do you mean Buell Miller?

interesting tidbit about Buell...a well known manager predicted he would be a future winner of a batting title. the same manager let him play as a young player and made him a full time starter in his second year in the league. I guess it doesn't hurt to hit .330 in your first 200 ML at bats...one would has to wonder why there was a different attitude in 2006 when a similar hitter was playing left field for the same manager.

I always really liked this guy.

I did, too.

Just wasn't the same for us after that injury in St. Louis, however.

Although he did win a batting title after that.

Yeah, he was awesome for us up until that point.

Good luck to him.

God that is the most depressing thing I have ever heard.

i was at the game where bill slid into the wall/tarp.

i think it was on mothers day wasnt it?

i got tickets the on the sat. because wood was pitching. found my way into the doghouse for a few weeks at home too.

good luck bill, you've already got a desk job w/ the dodgers, so i assume you'll be ok.

My favorite Bill Mueller memory is that whenever he came to the plate in MVP Baseball 2004, Mike Krukow would say, "Now here's a guy who won't be winning any batting titles anytime soon."

Mueller was, of course, the defending AL batting champion when the game was made.
