If they are planning to trade jones, the cubs almost have to sign drew. or else go with no left handed hitters. Edited by stitchface

Planning to trade Jones?

I'd be very surprised if Jones were dealt.

It's not Hendry's M.O. to sell high. It's also not his M.O. to get rid of a guy he coveted so quickly.

Planning to trade Jones?

Apparently, the other night on Sports Central, Kaplan said not to expect Jacque to be on the team come opening day.

I'd rather see the cubs sign Drew, trade for Manny Ramirez, who rosenthal says is available, and ship Jones out somewhere. The concern then becomes outfield defence, with Murton in left, Drew in center, Ramirez in right.

The upside is mammoth outfield OBP, some great slugging and no contract beyond 4 yrs. I could see soriano's contract becoming an expensive albatross very quickly.

The question is: what does it take to get Ramirez from boston?

Probably not a whole lot.

They were willing to let him go for free off waivers a couple years ago.

I seriously think they'd let him go for Eyre, Jones and Dempster if we took all his salary.

I think there could be a big difference now though. They've won a World Series since then, which makes it harder to trade some of the key components of that for little beause of the P.R. move. Also, his contract is not for nearly as many years now, which means they are in a completely different financial setting then they were 3 years ago. I'm not sure it has to be to the level of his talent, but it will take a person or two they really want in order to acquire Manny.

If thats the case, save the ridiculous soriano money, offload some of Hendrys spare parts, and lets score some runs.

Is it possible for Drew to re-sign with the Dodgers for more money?

Is it possible as far as it is legal? Of course. Will it happen? No way-Coletti basically called him out after he opted out, and burned every bridge the Dodgers had left.

Sure, it's possible, but with how upset coletti and co are with Drew for opting out, unlikely. They are"moving on"

Maybe switch Dempster for Izturis and add a prospect. I think that seems a more likely package.

Drew is the only bat out there right now that will make me feel good about this offense. A lineup of Murton, Drew, Lee, Ramirez, Barrett, Jones, DeRosa, pitcher, and Izturis wouldn't be so bad.

If they grossly overpay for Soriano, you risk replacing Jones' 2006 season with Soriano in 2007...and then having Jones. Drew transforms the top of that lineup and adds much needed OBP and power. Soriano would be better suited for the 5 spot, meaning DeRosa would likely bat 2nd. And I don't think any of us wants to see that.

I approve of this message.

Drew is a much better risk in both dollars and years for the Cubs. I hope Hendry realizes this and it overcomes his appearent man-lust for Soriano.

for what it's worth, the Boston's WEEI radio mentioned on my way home from work that the Red Sox are on the verge of signing Drew to a 4 year $48mil plus contract

That sucks. I'm really starting to dislike Yankees northeast.

I really hope that's true.
