I tell you, only Jimbo could look at a pool of Vincente Padilla, Miguel Batista, Ted Lilly, Gil Meche, etc., and pull the wrong one out.

I've supported Hendry a lot in the past, but this is just getting ridiculous. We overpaid by about a million a year for DeRosa. Forgiveable, if he was really Hendrys starting 2B target, well, he's dumb, but I can forgive overpaying to get your man. But overpaying by a million a year for Hank White? Idiocy. Soto would have done fine. There would be multiple veteran backups who can't hit available all the way up until the start of the season, mostly for the minimum. And now we're going to pay a quick sign premium to Gil freaking Meche?

Inexcusible. Between these three we'll be paying 11.5 to 15 million depending on Meche's contract. Waste.

This deal with Meche isn't done yet so I will reserve judgement for now but I do agree that Hank is overpaid. Who knows, Barrett might be traded; his name has come up quite a but in trade rumors which is unusual because he was once thought to be one of Hendry's untouchables.

i am not a fan of blanco at all, i agree soto would do the same at a fraction of the cost. What i don't understand is what makes everyone think derosa would only get 2-3 mil a year? that is not the market right now, players are getting lots of money so you can either sit around and wait for a "bargain" or pay the price for the guy you want. lastly, just because you want someone doesnt mean they want you, i would be very shocked if schmidt leaves the west coast for example. i will reserve my judgement untili see the final product and not tear it apart piece by piece as it happens.

Could someone please get Hendry a new list?

I would really like to see the acceptable fans' list. From what I can tell, this board has narrowed Hendry's acceptable signing list to JD Drew and everybody else is subpar or a waste of money.

Have you tried reading posts and/or scrolling to see other threads, then clicking on them?

A lot of GMs set aside time today to schedule meetings with agents & players (and each other).

It may well be that Hendry is meeting with Meche/Meche's agent and that along with the fact that Hendry has been making deals has sparked the speculation. Understandable.

I didn't hear the Levine report -- did he give any details?

I would take gamble on Meche. Still a young guy with alot of potential.

A gamble on such a player would be fine. If Jim gets him for 1 year relatively cheaply, great. If he signs him longterm at big money, that's not a gamble, that's throwing away money.

Gil Meche?! Please no .... but if it's any consolation, Chris Carpenter had a Meche-like 1.5 WHIP his last two years in the AL before joining the Cards.

Who here thinks Meche can make the same AL-to-NL turnaround under the expert tutleage of Larry R?

* crickets *

Is this thing actually close to happening or just speculation at this point.

It seems like speculation, but it could also be close to happening. There's no way to know until after it's done (or doesn't happen).

It's scary how Hendry throws money left and right to mediocre players, it's sickening.

Bloated contracts list:

Dempster

Rusch

DeRosa

Izturis

Blanco

Don't forget (if no one has pointed this out) that he would be moving to the NL from the AL....that should help his walk rates a bit, and his overall ERA

That's so funny I was just thinking this sounds like the Chris Carpenter philosophy.

Meche didn't have the surgeries though I don't think. I don't know if his stuff is as good.

He did eat up some innings last year, and his numbers looked a bit better than the year before. I dunno........if this were to happen, would Meche be the much-talked-about Prior hedge, or would he be expected to be, you know, an actual productive guy from the start?

Good idea, pay $9M per year for a guy who has been below average in 4 consecutive season. WHIP over 1.40 for someone who pitches half his games in one of the best pitcher's parks in all of baseball? No thanks. Go with Padilla or Wolf.

or Lilly :) Actually Wolf would be a very intriguing possibility.

Because we know if the Cubs sign him they will give him 9M a year?

To sign Meche so early and considering what other options are out there I think Meche would get at least 8mil per IMO.

I know I'm in the minority about this, but I really wouldn't mind Meche. The guy has some good stuff and some potential. Maybe a change of scenery and a move to the NL will be good for him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him put up an ERA at about 4. Last year he pitched 4 games vs NL teams. 2 against San Diego, 1 against the Dbacks, and 1 against the Giants. In those 4 games, he pitched 29.1 innings and gave up only 6 ER, 20 hits, and 5 walks. I know those offenses aren't great, but most of the offenses in the NL aren't very good.

I think its more that people dont want us to over pay for Meche, he's high risk low reward type of guy. Money better spent elsewhere when one of our young arms could probably do just as well for much less money.
