Ok so what would be the big difference between him at 2nd and Theriot, dont they both have similar numbers all across the board?? average,OBP,his SLG might be alittle higher, not sure, but the RBI and HR's would look pretty similar

I think he's just a slightly older version of Theriot. Had he signed a 3/3 deal, that's not a big deal. 3/13 is steep for what he's done over the course of his career.

that was my thoughts too. theroit isn't proven, but derosa doesn't really seem to be either, though if he can do what he did last year offensively it would be great(mind you that was in texas).

AVG .296 | HR 13 | RBI 74 | OBP .357 | SLG .456

not bad. but walker probably would have done about the same.

I don't understand the gripe. 4 million a year is the market for a veteran 2nd baseman with average numbers.

He's a below average hitter and has never been an everyday 2B. And he'll be 32, 33, and 34 during his 3 year deal.

that's an awfully lot of money. I wish it was Durham, but let's hope DeRosa is at least his numbers from last year.

If this situation ends up with Izzy gone and TheRiot at short then I think it's a good move. If the middle infield is Izzy and DeRosa then I pissed, that would require a HUGE boost in production from the OF and I don't see that coming thus far.

The difference? I'm thinking about $4 million a year....

Coulda saved the $4 M and added a bit more for a guy like Durham or Loretta.

You don't think the difference is going to so to Soriano or pitchers?

My hope is that he's just a primary bench guy...I know it's a lot of money for that, but we've thrown away money on lesser players (See Perez, Neifi).

Probably a bit over-paid, but not dramatically so. If he's only ok, we can turn him into an extemely expensive utility player (where he'll definitely be too expensive, but other then that he is very valuable in that respect). If he can continue to play pretty well like last year, then he is worth it.

It's certainly not an impact signing, but if the impact comes at other positions, then this will turn into a fine signing.

Shouldve signed Durham...He would doubled Derosas HR's and RBI's, similar OBP and AVG... I wouldve taken more power from the position anyday...Why not just keep Theriot at 2nd..Theres really no difference there

I don't love it, I don't hate it.

How is he with the glove, anyone know?

he seems to be good on d at 2b in 2003 he had a .985 in 29 games and in 2006 had a .993 in 26 games. not enough games to judge him by but it is encouraging. i think it means that the cubs have faith in ep as they can always use him off the bench (although he is way overpaid for a utility guy).

DeRosa had th 5th best OPS among all qualified 2B in baseball last year. Even with regress from 2006, he's not below average.

Spending millions for such a lack of production can very well impact other positions, negatively.

for texas in 2006 he had a fielding percentage of .993 with a zone rating of .917 at second base for what it's worth(though he played more games at third and right) Edited by Shilzzz

I'm with a few of the other posters here.

Meh.

Assuming he has a decent glove, I could see him producing Walker-like numbers without people having the gripe about defense. That said, he could also be worse than Todd.

Wish we just would've kept Walker...one less hole to fill.

Not a bad signing. He can play all over the place and seems pretty patient with the bat. This seems like Hendry type of move, and isn't real surprising. I'm not too thrilled or disappointed with this one.

That would be awsome right there..both good with OBP...Get rid of Izzy..
