There has to be someone worse than JH.

Baltimore's GM, Flanigan is pretty weak.

What he actually pulls off is pretty weak, but he's been rebuffed when he's the highest offer quite a few times now. He's trying to make some decent moves, but they never quite happen.

I'm not convinced yet that the dartboard Hendry throws at isn't the real GM of this team.

I no longer pretend that JD Drew is anywhere on Hendry's radar. He seems to be in love with Soriano, and I have NEVER seen a published report connecting Drew's name with the Cubs. It's all wishful thinking by people here.

I don't think they are looking at Drew either-in my opinion, it seems to be Soriano or bust now.

Hurray! Hendry is at it again! Someone please go to wherever these meeting are being held and kidnap Jim. He's lost his mind and is handing out suitcases full of cash to anybody that signs the dotted line. Who knows whose next? I hate these GM meetings with a passion!

I have read a few articles adding the Cubs to the Drew sweepstakes. I think it is mostly writer speculation based on need/fit analysis, and not word from the organization though.

From mlb.com

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is still talking to the agents representing center fielder Juan Pierre, who also is a free agent.

"We knew he was going to test the market," Hendry said of Pierre, who led the National League in hits in 2006 with 204 and batted .292 for the Cubs. "I'm not going to rush him. He chose to go on the market, and if I were him, I'd do the same thing."

The Cubs also have some vacancies to fill in the rotation, and are looking at adding another bat. Hendry has talked to agents representing both Alfonso Soriano and Carlos Lee, two free agents who could provide some much-needed pop in the Cubs lineup.

Only Jim Hendry, with wheelbarrows full of money, would talk to the agent for Juan Pierre rather than the agent for JD Drew. [-(

Hey Jim. We tried that. It failed miserably. Let someone else try it now.

Since very few posters gave him props for signing his own free agents (ARam, Wood, and Miller), I would think he should be ahead of the GMs that couldn't even sign their own free agents (Soriano, Drew, Schmidt, Zito, CLee, etc.).

I'll kill myself if we end up with Pierre again.

Why kidnap him? Show up to Naples, Florida with a baseball mitt, and collect a payday! =D>

What?

You want to rank him ahead of Beane because he managed to resign Ramirez but Beane didn't resign Zito? That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

All I'm saying is that I think Hendry has done a good job so far and deserves some props. I can imagine the 100+ thread of criticism if he let

someone like Zito walk, while Beane (and others) come out smelling like a rose.

The Pierre comments are public face. What else is Hendry going to say? i read his comments as being an underhanded goodbye.

As for J.D., haven't we Cub fans suffered enough pinning our pennant hopes on chronically-injured stars?

I believe that is the most likely scenario too but I can't handle another year of Pierre here.

I bet Beane could resign Zito with a payroll exceeding $80Mil, let alone $100+

Sure it does. I realize that the A's made the playoffs with Zito but Beane should have cashed that chip at the deadline. Zito's loss would have been overcome with the depth the A's had.

Hendry's big negative is that he overpays for medocrity. Again I say whoopeedo. Medocrity is what exists in baseball. There are only so many "superstars" available. Last offseason most here were clamoring for Brian Giles. That would have equaled roughly the same as what Jones put together. The difference is that Jones has a more manageable contract and that leaves the right doors open for Hendry - Trades.

There hasn't been one trade that Hendry has made that has been a poor move. If Hendry has a club of mangeable and tradeable contracts then we can be active on the trade front.

Beane has continually lost his guys over the years and he keeps building playoff teams. If Hendry had shown in the past to be able to keep improving the team despite losing star players I would not mind so much if he wasn't able to re-sign a guy like Ramirez.
