Levine said that they are talking to Durham and are talking to the Indians about Jake Westbrook

Also could look at Padilla, Meche, and Lilly

Doesn't see Zito or Schmidt coming to the Cubs

I thought Westbrook was a strong candidate to become a Hendry target. 3 straight years of 200+ innings, and below average to very good effectiveness during those innings. I don't believe he's a free agent until after 2008, but he'll make a lot in arbitration following this season.

And I'm deathly afraid he'd trade Matt Murton for Westbrook then sign Carlos Lee.

He said the Cubs would be trading young bull pen arms for Westbrook which "was the one commodity they had to trade."

Also said Lilly was looking for 4/36.

Please dont trade Michael Wuertz! Give them anyone else, but hold on to Wuertz, please.

Young relievers for a starter like Westbrook would be nice, but I doubt that gets it done. He'd probably have to at least include a guy like Moore, and maybe a young starter as well.

DeLuca claims in today's Sun-Times that Hendry & Piniella have their hearts set on Soriano. "As it stands now, the Cubs are saving their biggest money for Soriano."

Murton, JJones and Cedeno are on the trading block.

Cubs are setting their sights on lower-tier pitchers like Padilla, Lilly and Igawa and are looking to restock pitching through trades (see above).

The Cubs' 2007 payroll is expected to reach $115 million, sources said.

If the DRays win the bidding for Iwamura, they may not play him at 3B (sounds like lots of teams are thinking that). And scouts love Ben Zobrist.

Would be a very good move for TB, Iwamura would likely be a huge upgrade over Cantu and let Upton and Zobrist play at SS/3B.

Despite finishing last in RS, they need pitching more than anything.

I'd be severly upset if the Cubs traded Murton. It would be nice to get good production for league minimum out of at least one position on the field.

i still like the idea of freddy garcia better. not that jake westbrook doesn't intrigue me, but i just think that a package of JJ, dempster, and marmol would get the deal done without increasing payroll at all.

The plan, if true, is a big mistake in my opinion. No one knows if Soriano can play CF and he will be fabulously overpaid for the last 2 to 3 years of his contract.

I wonder if Hendry is still looking for the mythical "lead off" position?

I don't have much of a problem trading Murton or Jones, but the Cubs have to get a young run producer from somewhere, and his name isn't Carlos Lee. He is neither young, nor worth the money.

This off-season it seems as if the Cubs plan is to buy their way to the pennant, but I don't like who they have on the shopping list.

the cubs better not end up having to panic and give GMJ a six year deal because they focused all their energy on soriano, only to have him sign w/ the angels. learn from the furcal adventure, please.

Yeah, I'd do it too, but I'd much rather give up any of our other bullpen arms.

Westbrook is a durable middle of the rotation starter. I'd like to see an elite #1 starter to compliment Z, but Westbrook falls into the same catagory as Suppan, Lilly, Padilla. If Hendry can get him, more power to him.

I don't want to trade Murton at all but we all have to agree that right now he probably has the most value. If we trade him for a top of the rotation 2-3 starter, guys like Bonderman, Bedard, Ervin Santanna, Chris Young and Jake Westbrook, I'd have to consider it. If we get Bedard and Carlos Lee I wouldn't complain, wouldn't be my first choice but I could understand the reason for making the deal because it would significantly improve our ballclub next year.

You like Freddy Garcia better than Westbrook? Freddy is older and losing it. His ERA+ has dropped for 2 straight years, and was nearly back to what it was when he wasn't good the last two full seasons in Seattle. Westbrook's peak season was as good as anything Garcia has done, and his 2006 was better than Freddy's as well. He also costs half the money in 2007.

If the Cubs traded Murton and Wuertz for Westbrook and Michaels and was able to sign Soriano. The OF would not look too bad.

I'm not saying that scenario wouldnt help the Cubs, I just hate the idea of loosing Murton. He's my favorite player since Sandberg, and I'm a more sentimental fan than most people here.

I'd much rather have Murton than Michaels. He brings a lot more slugging to the table and I suspect his OBP will also be higher than Michael's next year as well (like it was this year).

P.S. Matt's my favorite player as well.

I think our standard package to start with should be something like Jones, Wuertz, and a mid level pitching prospect for one of those starters. With that you save more money to go and sign either Drew, Soriano, or Lee and Dave Roberts for center.

Agreed, but Michaels would be in CF while the FA would be in LF (hopefully Drew/Soriano).
