how do you propose the Braves taking a deal for Giles if we just give them Jones?

I don't think he meant we'd be trading Jones for Giles. Just that we'd be dumping Jones on some other team via trade.

A Giles trade would probably involve some combination of prospects.

Have to be stupid to not sign him. Yes, he's an injury risk, but he played in 145 and 146 games 2 out of the last 3 years, so it's not like he didn't play.

Sign Drew for 4/50, sign Lofton to a one year deal to be his backup and rest him once in a while, and we're good to go.

Im all good for the 4/50. Hell id go to 55.

Sometimes you gotta say what the F. If you can't say it, you can't do it.

Thats my phrase that pays for this offseason.

I would like to see Drew in RF. Drew playing CF would be a big injury risk.

Wasn't there a controversy a couple years ago because Drew wanted to play CF because he said there was less cutting involved and it was easier on his knees than RF? The Dodgers put Milton Bradley in CF instead.

Yes, that is correct. Plus in Wrigley, I'd have to imagine its actually easier on the body to play CF than RF. Plus, I dont really understand how playing RF would be easier on one's body (legs).

Didn't Sammy say something to that effect when he played center for a few games too?

The injury that kept him from making that 3/3 was a broken hand by getting hit by a pitch. If not for that he may have very well been healthy for 3 straight years.

Haha, fans talking about getting Drew, and Matsuzaka, and/or Schmidt or Soriano, hilarious. You do know this is the Cubs, right?

Shut up and be happy with the Dave Roberts, Mark DeRosa, Wade Miller and Ted Lilly signings you're going to get, them boys spell World Series to me!

Nah, you shut up. I'll dream while I can 'cause its more fun that way.

He would be the perfect fit. A good OBP guy who can play CF and move over to RF when Pie is ready who also happens to bat lefty.

Just what the GM ordered...

Posted

Does anyone know what his last contract looked like? What kind of dollars is he looking for.

Signing Drew could make Pie expendable. If A-Rod is available and the Cub loose Aramis they could package Pie with Hill and try to snag A-Rod.

exactly. hendry couldn't have lucked out any more than this. exactly the type of player the cubs need, and he's there for the taking.

he could put up huge numbers playing in the NL central, by the way.

Re-sign Aram

Trade Jones

Trade for Marcus Giles

Sign Roberts

Dave Roberts CF

Marcus Giles - 2B

Derrek Lee -1B

Aramis Ramirez 3B

JD Drew - RF

Matt Murton - LF

Michael Barrett - C

Ceasar No-bat - SS

I'm not sure I wouldn't rather keep Jacque (never thought I'd say that) and put Drew in CF...

(with the rest of your moves in mind)

Murton

Giles

Lee

Ramirez

Drew

Barrett

Jones

Izturis

Looks better to me...

Small issue, but I don't know why Drew would be BEHIND the big RBI guys. He's a career .393 OBP guy. Lee has only been that good at getting on base, once....and that was his awesome 2005. Drew's my #3 hitter. I could understand 4th to break up the RHs and have Lee 3rd, since he would still likely be the team's best hitter.

But yeah, Drew in CF would be great.

With his injury history, does Drew get more than the 3 years, $33 million he just walked away from?

In this market? yes.

There's lots of teams with money and few players worth spending it on. My guess is he'll get an extra year. I'd look at Drew signing a 4/50 contract.

If he stays healthy, that would be a bargain.

I'd love to see what a legit LH hitter could do full-time in Wrigley. It hasn't been proven by the great Cub LH sluggers of the past like Jones, Burnitz, Henry Rodriguez, and 50-year old McGriff (though Jones and HRod had career power years here)....but I feel a LH hitter with power can excel in Chicago. It's no coincedence guys like Dunn, B. Giles and other LH sluggers fare well in Wrigley.

Just thinking logically with Wrigley and the deep wells actually less running is involved in CF compared to RF. I don't remember if Sammy said anything about it though and it would have had to have been a long time ago so it would be difficult to find.

If Hendry passes this up, I might lose my mind.

Soriano LF

Drew CF

Jones RF

=P~

Id much prefer

Murton LF

Drew CF

Dunn RF (or more realistically Kearns RF)
