'04 Cubs most frustrating one ever. If wouldn't have taken a nap in late september they would have been in the World Series. And they sure as heck would have beat these '06 Cardinals. Edited by Brian

I forgot how much I enjoyed that season. It was nice seeing Prior and Wood on the mound and showing incredible emotion. I hope the team gets that intensity back and contends next year. While I won't ever stop watching, it's much more enjoyable when they play well. It's amazing the downward spiral this team took the last few years.

I can still taste the utter disapointment that was September of 2004......................wow...

PS Man does Barrett have a temper!

Since about 3:00 on September 25, 2004 it's been all downhill.

We were about to go up 3.5 games on the Astros with a week to go and a favorable schedule remaining. Instead we blew that game in the 9th went on a tailspin and have gone 147-186 ever since. We were 183-146 prior to that.

Things were so promising...

thanks for the reminder that the cubs used to be fun

Hey anytime I can crush your spirit, just let me know.

2003 notwithstanding, the 2004 Cubs have to be among the most entertaining teams to follow in the history of sports. All the hype, all the talent, all the weird games, all the meltdowns, the subplot of the fans turning against Sammy, Zambrano having his best year to date (nobody noticed, of course), Wavin' Wendell, Maddux's 300th, Nomar, and I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting.

The 04 Cubs had easily had a better team than the 06 Cardinals do.

Damn, it was bittersweet watching that. I remember I had to watch that game on tape because I was working and being so frustrated watching those clips at the end...mostly because that was supposed to be THE year, but also because I couldn't stand that damn song (still can't).

I know the clips are selected for maximum impact, but in those 4 minutes you see more fire and passion in the whole team (Dusty included) than you saw in the next 2 years combined. What the hell happened? And man, it is downright sad seeing some of those players...I have my issues with Sosa, but he provided us with so many moments of incredible baseball. I was so friggin' excited when the Cubs managed to squeak in that Nomar trade and figured he would be so important to 2005. And I remember Alou and Walker easily being my favorite players. Not even sure why, I just always really liked both. Man...

I remember watching that last game of the season. It was very bittersweet. I remember it being rumored that it was Chip and Steve's last game in the booth, and Chip confirming that he was leaving at the end of the broadcast. That season seems like a lifetime ago. Its really amazing they only won 89 games with that team. I was convinced that the Garciaparra trade was the deciding factor in the Cubs having a successful second half of the year. Unfortunately, they never really play that great, and the last week and a half was one of the most painful times I've ever been a Cub fan. I can vividly recall listening to a fading radio signal of WGN as my buddies and I were driving up to Minnesota for a Bears-Vikings game, as Hawkins blew that game against the Mets with the 3-run homer in the 9th inning. I knew the season was over right then and there. I also miss a good Mark Prior.

Actually, right now has to be one of the worst moments I can remember:

a) The cards are about the win the world series

b) The sox won it last year

c) We won 60-something games

So basically the two biggest rivals have each won the world series in the past two years and my team is going the other way.

Yeah, it sucks to be a Cubs fan right now.

Man that team was loaded. I still can't believe they only won 89 games. Freakin' Cubs. At least I had a reason to watch baseball through September that year.

Sosa, Alou, Lee, Aramis, Barrett, Nomar...

Sweet Jesus, that's not right.

Gosh...that is difficult to watch.

The end of that season was a blur, but I do remember we were close and managed to blow it.

How did we loose with all those guys?

Due to Hurrican Ivan(?) we ended up having to play 24 games in 22 days or something like that.

Hawkins also really sucked if my memory serves me correctly.

We ran into a couple of soft tossing lefties along the way. The offense just tanked. Prior, Z and Rusch (yes Glendon Rusch) were pitching lights out in September that year too :(
