He was just asked to give Ryan Howard some advice on how to perform even better at the plate...

Dusty told him to take more walks and be patient....

he's actually auditioning for the Nationals job, if he gets Howard to walk more he'll ruin the Phillies team because the bases will be to clogged for anybody else to do anything thus the Nationals will be better.......

You know... Listening to Baker earlier in the year...you might just be right.

I'm suprised he hasn't said stuff like "I don't think Pudge and Placedo are doing that well because it's been too damn cold all series. They aren't used to playing in this rediculously cold weather. If they were smart, they would have activated Chris Shelton for this series and moved Brandon Inge back to catcher."

Dusty also said that the key for the Tigers to get their offense on track in the series would be for them to start getting guys on base... Whodathunkit?

You know I sat there wondering "Who on ESPN just said some intelligent words?"

And I find out the guy who said that was Dusty I literally spit out the water I was drinking on the TV.

Where the heckamondo was that when he was here?

Methinks somebody got in his ear about this whole OBP thing.

We'll see if it's just talk soon enough...

Maybe a little talk with Billy Beane. I like what Lou says about woirking the count. Don't just take pitches without a plan, have a plan and work it the way a hitter should by making a pitcher pitch and hit your pitches and not his.

I have to say, Dusty is sounding a little more professional at the ESPN job the past few days. He was horrible the first few times, always reading from his notes and sounding frightened.

Maybe someone encouraged him to take a few shots beforehand?

Perhaps Dusty himself really doesn't believe in taking no walks and swinging at everything. Maybe that's really Hendry, and Dusty was just trying to carry out his plan. Which of course failed miserably.

I doubt it. I just think he knows it gives him a bad reputation so he's changing his tune now so he will look better to the public, and to possible teams looking for a manager. Nothing more. .

Perhaps all the talk about being aggressive was his way of defending his players that were aggressive hitters. Just like the "clogging the bases" comment was his way of saying that he'd rather have Alou swing away than wlk since it would take 3 hits to score him.

I heard him the other night preaching patience re the Tigers hitters. Made me crazy. He does sound a lot better on t.v. than he did when he was with us.

Protect them from what? I don't want a manager protecting the flaws of players, I want him helping to eliminate those flaws, or, at the very least, limit those flaws.

You know, would there be any greater irony than Dusty Baker having an OBP awakening, going to the Athletics, and winning the World Series?

I never said it was a good thing.

Former manager Dusty Baker got an earful from Cardinals fans during Game 3 when the scoreboard showed an MLB commercial with Tommy Lasorda telling a Cubs fan to get out of a tree. The bleacher section turned and heckled Baker, who was working in an ESPN booth on the bleacher concourse. Baker laughed and acknowledged the hecklers.

Our perhaps it was the Freakin' PLAYERS!

OK, I don't like Dusty, but lets not over or under estimate him.

John Kruk predicting that the 2007 World Series champion will be whatever team Dusty Baker manages, for the "wisdom and experience he'll impart to his next players."

No, seriously.

The Kool-Aid on the SportsCenter set at New Busch must be particularly tasty tonight.

Sure, Dusty gets a lot of credit for his Cub teams not walking, but let's give credit where it is due. To Mr. Jim Hendry. No manager could possibly get the Cubs of the past few years to walk. The players didn't walk with other teams, and they didn't walk for Dusty.

Dusty had his faults, but he gets too much credit for this one. And I think one reason is that he always defended his players free swinging to the media, as he usually defended his players in general.
