All I ask from the Cubs is to trade for A-rod, sign Mike Cameron, and sign eitehr Daz, Zito, or Scmidt. If you can't get A-rod then go after Julio Lugo.

A lineup of Theriot, Murton, Lee, A-rod, Aram, Barrett, Cameron, Jones or Lugo, Theriot, Lee, Aram, Murton, Barrett, Cameron, Jones both look pretty good.

I doubt that the Padres will fail to exercise their option on Cameron.

Isn't there a limit to the number of Type A FA's you can sign?

I don't believe the limit is tied to Type A's only. I think it extends down to Type B and C as well.

Is it tied to your draft picks, or just to the number of FA's you lose?

Looking at it our only type A is likely to be Pierre.

I don't remember what the numbers are exactly. Tim or JeffH might have the particulars. If you don't lose any free agents, there is a set maximum number, like 3 that can be signed. For each free agent you lose, you get an extra free agent signing above and beyond the "3". I don't believe it matters what Type FA they are.

But, PLEASE understand, I don't recall the specifics. I could be way off.

I didn't realize the Padres had a club option. There goes in my mind the easiest and quite possibly the most cost effective solution to our CF problems.

Now, I'd really have to consider signing Soriano if he is willing to play CF. But I'd still not advocate him batting leadoff.

Can anyone recall a time when a team got three of the top 5 free agents. I can remember quite a few when teams got two of the top 5. Blue Jays last year with Ryan and Burnett, Mariners signing Beltre and Sexson...

What about this?

Cubs sign Schmidt and Soriano.

They trade Prior plus prospects for Arod.

They trade young pitcher for Marcus Giles.

They re-up Miller.

They keep Aramis.

Look at this team:

CF Soriano (15)

2b Giles (6)

1b Lee (13)

SS Arod (16)

3b Ramirez (13)

RF Jones (5)

LF Murton (400K)

C Barrett (4)

SP Zambrano (10)

SP Schmidt (11)

SP Hill (400K)

SP Miller (2)

SP: Whoever isn't traded (400 K)

Bullpen: Dempster, Eyre, Howry, Ohman, Wuertz, Aardsma (14)

Bench: Does it matter? 4.5)

Total: 115

How often does a team go out and get 3 of the top 5 free agents AND trade for one of the best available players via trade in 1 offseason?

Ain't happenin'.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the Mets sign Beltran and Pedro in the same year as they traded for Wagner? Then added Delgado the following off-season? That's as close to your scenario as I can remember.

I would still like to see Wood in the Bullpen. But, that does look like a winner.

Yes, the bench does matter to a team success. What if Soriano gets hurt. Then who is going to fill in CF? What if Lee gets injured again. Who will take his spot at 1b? You need depth on your bench. A versitle bench is the way to go.

The Yankees aren't going to get rid of Cano AND A-Rod. To even think of that deal, they would want Zambrano AND Ramirez.

Versatility on the bench is overrated. Macias, Perez, Bynum and others were all very versatile, but they sucked. I say try and get 1, maybe 2 journeyman bench guys with decent bats, then give the rest of the jobs to cheap labor, because they are just as productive as your typical veteran bench player.

Likewise, if you have the players named in the lineup you were critiquing, it would be much easier to withstand an injury to a starter, because the team wouldn't be dependent on two players, like this year's team.

I havent heard a limit of Type A free agents you can sign. The Cubs first round pick is protected anyway. So does that mean they cant sign a type A free agent? No way. I believe the team with a Type A gets a sandwhich first rounder if one isnt available.
Posted
I thought you could only sign 2 type A free agents. I could be wrong on that though, of course.

I think you can also sign as many as you lose. So if Pierre is a type-A, we can sign another when Pierre goes elsewhere.

Ah geeze!

Ok, bench: Scoot Moore 1b/3b, Ryan Theriot 2b/ss/3b, Pagan OF, Restovich OF, Soto C, Coats 2b/3b/OF.

If Lee, gets hurt Moore plays. If Soriano gets hurt, we call up Pie. If Ramirez gets hurt, Moore plays. If Murton gets hurt, Pagan plays.

There's a nice bench all at league minimum. Happy now. I'd rather spend my money on players who actually help the team win.

"Something that's never mentioned is that there are still limits to the type of free agents that teams may sign.

If there are 14 or less type A and B players available, no team may sign more than 1 type A or B player. If there are 15-38 available A and B players, no team may sign more than 2. From 39-62 this becomes 3. The club quota increases accordingly for higher totals of available free agents. There is no maximum allowed for type C free agents. Lastly, a team can sign up to as many type A and B free agents as they've lost, regardless of the above quota."

Soriano and Schmidt could be our two if there are at least 15 Type A-B.

Pierre leaving would give us one more. The good thing is that Daisuke would not be subject to that quota if we can land the winning bid.

If Hendry does really try for these guys is he willing to overpay? He's shown in the past he isn't.

What are you basing this on? Lee got a fantatsic deal. Ramirez is well paid. The offer to Furcal was market value (nobody expected the Dodgers to crazy with their offer).

If he says these guys are in his sights, and news reports show Soriano as his number one target, why disbelieve it? Just out of natural Cubs angst?

Furcal, Pudge, Beltran.
